Brett Dennon

Brett Dennen is a folk singer from Oakdale, Calif. He’s still a little under the radar, even though he’s already toured the US, Europe, and Australia. Many of you probably already know all about him and his great music.

He’s got a gorgeous voice, and his lyrics are so good. I highly recommend giving him a listen, especially if you like folk music. He is wonderful! Heck, if you just like music in general, not only folk music, you should check him out. His music is really good.

You can listen to a few of his songs for free on his myspace page.

What’s on your turntable these days?

Love him! He's my fave! I've been lucky enough to stick around after his shows and talk with him, and he's such a warm and friendly guy too that loves connecting with his fans. I do love this new album, but all of his old ones are amazing too. Great recommendation, Alicia!

AHH He is literally my favorite singer! His songs have such a positive messages are it what children should be listening to!  He came out to meet the fans at the show I went to too. Such a nice guy. Great post Alicia!

Dennen has soul, it's my first time listening to his music. I think its great. Right now, I have Sufjan Steven's Seven Swans on full rotation. Amazing recommendation, thanks Alicia!

I had never heard of him, but LOVED his music on his site. I was about ready to buy the CD, but realized they are only available as mp3s or on iTunes. I was going to give it as a gift, this makes it more challenging.

I guess I had better get with the times.

I recently heard Brett Dennen for the first time and I have to say he has a great voice!  I'm glad to see he is getting some recognition. If you like Brett Dennen you should also check out Girlyman. They're more of an alt folk group and have the most beautiful three part harmonies. I highly recommend seeing them live if you get a chance, they actually sound better live than on their CDs, not to mention they are hysterically funny!!!

Thank you. I added him to my Pandora shuffle.

i love brett dennen!!

Alicia!!  Brett Dennen is my man!  I had never heard of him when I saw him open for my favorite band ever, The Avett Brothers, and I couldn't stop dancing during his whole set.  I LOVED it!  I'm so glad you do to and his music is reaching people.  Oh, and check out The Avett Brothers too!!  If they don't grab a hold of your soul...then, I don't know, give them another listen because it's impossible not to fall in love with them.

My husband's band

I came across this old photo and wanted to share it with you all! It’s a little personal picture of my husband's old band S.T.U.N. This picture was taken in probably 2005 or 2006, and it was from the last show that they ever played. They were playing at an animal rights benefit/festival for John Feldman Goldfinger with My Chemical Romance.

Anywho, I just think that Bobby (the drummer) and my husband Christopher (the one screaming into the mic) are so cute and cool in this picture! I had never seen this photo before, someone sent it to us recently... And I thought it was so rockin’ and wanted to share!

Eco Sneakers

Blink 182’s multi-talented Tom DeLonge has co-created an eco shoe line called Macbeth for both men and women. There are lots of colors and styles to choose from, and all the shoes are made from organic canvas or denim, heat-molded natural rubber, and homemade vegan glue (many glues contain casein or other animal-derived products).

I love that he’s inviting other artists to help design the shoes too! Here’s what DeLonge had to say about the brand in an interview with Sneaker Freaker magazine:

“Macbeth has several characteristics that set it apart from other sneaker brands. For starters, we strive to make really good products. We are the original music footwear brand actually created by musicians. Our line is inspired directly from our exclusive group of artists, unlike other brands that simply latch on to whatever fad is hip at the moment. The Macbeth Studio Project program is something we pride ourselves on. Rather than buying merchandise rights to a band's name and logo; we work directly with an artist to capture their personality and artistic personality in each and every product. Macbeth also does a lot of charitable work with Invisible Children [a movement seeking to end the conflict in Uganda and stop the abduction of children for use as child soldiers]. We maintain a low profile, classic silhouette that is comfortable for the artist while playing on stage but also fits within their style.”

Which Macbeth style do like the best?

Frog Mtn band

For my birthday party at Animal Acres, my husband got together with his musician friends and made up a band called the Frog Mountain Band!

The other band members were my dear friend, the gorgeous and talented Leisha Hailey of Uh Huh Her, Bobby, who was in S.T.U.N. with my husband, and is now in the Street Drum Corps, and Chris Murphy along with his talented men.

little boy playing along

This little boy was rocking out with the band, and in the video from my party, you can see the little girl rockin out too!

It got freezing at the end of the day when they started to play, so we had to find clothes to put on Leisha. Her super cute outfit was way too cold – so she might be horrified to have you see her in this outfit! They played wonderful music. It was sweet to see my husband play - he never invites me to his gigs, so this was special : )

What’s your favorite kind of music?

Michael Franti

Please see this documentary that Michael Franti of the band Spearhead made. It’s called I Know I’m Not Alone. It’s really good! If you like people and you like Michael Franti, or if you just like music, you will like this film. It’s really beautiful.

The late film director Anthony Minghella (English Patient, Cold Mountain) said, “Watch this film then insist that Michael Franti becomes President of the United States.”

Serj Tankian of the band System of A Down said, “Michael’s a modern minstrel weaving stories of war and occupation into his heart of peace, giving us hope, not just tears. The film is powerful, honest, and touching.”

If you’re new to Michael Franti, here is a video of him singing “Hey World”

I was lucky enough to meet Franti in New York when I was doing a play on Broadway some nine or so years ago. My friend Renee, (Renee was not in the film, but she was also dragging us to the show) and Tom Balanco, who is in I Know I’m Not Alone with Franti, insisted we go see him. We got there too late, so we stood outside and watched from outside as people danced their butts off! Jumping, happy, sweaty people – when they came out, they looked so happy! We missed the show, but Renee and I sat on his tour bus with him, and that was my first intro to this wonderful man.

At the same time, whenever I was at Woody and Laura’s house, I would hear this amazing album and ask “who is this?” And they always said, “Oh that’s Spearhead!” Anywho, I had many great moments with Franti over the years, seeing him play and hearing his music, and spending time with him. And to top it all off, he played at my wedding! I can’t even express how insanely lucky Christopher and I were that he did that for us. It was truly beautiful. He is an amazing man, doing amazing things. He is such a talented and wonderful artist – his album Stay Human is so good! You cannot go to a Franti show and not have fun.

Anywho, please check out this film. Michael Franti goes to Baghdad and Gaza to meet the people, and just play music and talk and laugh with them – in the middle of war and occupation. It’s really heart-warming, educational, and informative – a really great journey. In the film he says “I’m on the side of the peacemakers, no matter where they come from.” I love that!

After you watch it, tell me what you think! It’s truly worth it, I promise.

Hey everyone – I have some entertaining music to share with you all... But I want to warn you, this is just fun silly stuff!  Not for you serious people out there.  If you are into rap or alternative music and have a sense of humor, check out these videos.  If not, you might wanna pass on these.

All of these videos are from this South African band called Die Antwoord. They are currently one of my husband Christopher’s favorite bands, and he showed me these videos the other night.  They are so awesome and freaky!  These videos had us laughing so hard.  Christopher says I remind him of the girl in these videos, especially in the Taxi Jam one! The whole thing makes me smile.

Let me know what you think!

Two years ago my husband and I took some guitar lessons from Chris Murphy.  Shannyn Sossamon, a beautiful vegetarian, recommended him to us.  She had taken lessons from him for a while and loved him.  So we took some lessons together, and it was really fun and exciting and hard!  And guess who gave up quickly?  Me!  But only because I had a book to write!  But my husband continued his lessons and he is still loving them.  He's mastering music theory now.

Chris is an extremely passionate teacher.  He is so focused and inspiring and so excited about life and art.  He's funny, sweet and wild!  And so feisty!  Check out his site if you're interested in music lessons.

We became friendly with Chris, and he often curates the musical journey of our gatherings, like our Cupcake Champagne party.  One time, he and Linda Perry from 4 Non Blondes started playing violin and guitar at our Thanksgiving. It was so rockin' and awesome!

Anywho, Chris also played with A Fine Frenzy at my book launch party.  And he played solo while guests arrived. I thought that was very classy.

Not only is a great teacher but he's also a wonderful artist who is an ideal wedding musician. He plays weddings all over the place and I can't imagine a more perfect person to make music for your wedding, or for any kind of party.

He can be so sophisticated and bow tie-like, or jazzy and snazzy downtown New York kind of vibe.  He's very affordable too, so if you want to book him for your event check out this site.  He can transform into whatever you need as he is a groovy, sophisticated, raw soul.

We love you Murphy!
