visiting family!

Breakfast

A little while ago Christopher and I drove down to San Diego to see my parents. My aunt, uncle and cousins from Staten Island were also down there visiting, so it was the perfect opportunity to see everyone before I left for Detroit to shoot Vamps.

Dog

When we got to San Diego, Christopher and I made the Peach and Mint Iced Tea from my book (page 212). We then took a walk with my mom’s 4 dogs... All were rescued of course! Then that night, we made a big, fun dinner for everyone.

Cooking

The entire dinner menu was made up of recipes from my book! I love that all of my favorite recipes are in one place... It makes my life so much easier when I’m planning meals! Here is the menu we prepared:

Preparing Meal

-Caesar Salad (pg. 175)
-Waffle, Sausage and Cheese Panini (pg. 153): This was sooooo yummie! I hadn’t had this one in a while, and it was absolutely delicious.
-Cuban-Style Roasted Sweet Potatoes (pg. 266): One of my cousins, Marlene, is Cuban so this was fun to make for her! These sweet potatoes turn out soooo good. We used white sweet potatoes, not the orange yams.
-Peanut Butter Pie (pg. 189) for dessert!

Aunt and Uncle

The whole meal was so good. Most of my family members are big-time meat eaters, and they all seemed very happy and satisfied, and thoroughly enjoyed the food. It was pretty darn sweet!

Cousins

Andrew and Melissa are my little cousins who are such sweet kids. They are now 15 and 13... But I remember when their mom was pregnant with them, and I would rub her belly! And I held them and squeezed them for the last 15 years, so it’s crazy that they’re mini-adults now! Time really flies.

Just wanted to share!

What a beautiful family! I'm in love with the pooch.

Looks good.   Cute dog for sure.

Someone in my English class today said she has

a dog that likes to eat blueberries.   Smart animal

have a good day Bryan

I loved seeing you and your recipes in such a genuine family setting!  My LI family (meat & cheese loving family) has loved every recipe I've made so far.

I've been slowly incorporating your recipes into our family gatherings- last night: Dad's 56th birthday!

6 months of vegan/superhero for me- thanks for the inspiration, it's changed my life!

Thanks for remaining so true to yourself and sharing that with us!

Aw..what pretty pictures.

Made the sandwiches for dinner last night... OMG. Those are the best thing I have had yet! I passed them right over in the book because they didn't have a picture (I know, bad habit) but when I saw you write about them on here I had to go back and look again. YUM!

I really loved this posting and the pics were super sweet.   I've had my 15 year old nephew with me this past week and I made him some soyriso & eggs (tofu).  He knows we're vegan here at home, so he suspected the meal was going to consist of "healthy food" as he likes to put it.  He actually loved it...He said "its actually really good healthy food".  That made my day, and so far he's had lots of vegan dishes that he never thought of eating before and that really made my heart full and happy!!  Thank you for all your delicious recipes and for helping change the mind of my nephew (hopfully soon to be a vegan!!).

Awwwwww! So good to see Paulie, and Marlene, the kids and the family!! ;) It's been a LONG time!! Oh, and Mario too!! Thanks for sharing! ;) <3 Pam

Great family function!!

adopt a christmas tree!
Posted by Alicia Silverstone on Dec 10, 2009

Kind Life member Emily W posted this note in the forums, and I wanted everyone to see it!

“For those of you in the San Diego area here is a great idea!!

If you want to have a Christmas tree during the holidays, but can't figure out if fake or cut is better (the research I've found shows both are pretty bad) here is a wonderful option -- www.AdoptAChristmasTree.com

They have dancing elves deliver a LIVE Christmas tree to your door, you decorate it and care for it during the season, then after they holidays they pick it up and plant it in a good spot. Unfortunately, this specific service is only in San Diego, but it sounds like similar projects are popping up elsewhere like San Francisco and Portland. Next year, every major city should have a program like this :)

I'm getting mine delivered this weekend and am SOOO excited to see an organization like this!!”

Yay Emily! I love that we can help to make the holidays more green.  Check out this video about www.AdoptAChristmasTree.com, there are lots of tips on how to make your holidays a little more kind.

Any of you who end up adopting Christmas trees, I’d love to see pictures and hear about it! And let me know if you find a service like this in your city!

And stay tuned, because we will have more info on fresh cut trees and other green alternatives soon....

San Diego was short but sweet!  I was only there for one day so I didn't get to check out very much.  I did eat at Loving Hut, and if you like Thai food I highly recommend it.  Warning to all superheroes: I left feeling very salted.  However, if you are a flirt or vegan you probably won't notice this.  I had some really yummy things though.  I had the Yum Yum Wanton soup and the BBQ Noodles with a bunch of cilantro, peanuts and soy protein that's basically like bbq'd chicken.

I had a book signing event at Isabel's Cantina. They have lots of veggie stuff on their menu usually I’m told, but that night they made mostly recipes from my book. And the whole meal for around 100 people was all plant based! My favorites that she made that night were the Artichoke, Mushroom, and Leek Crostini with Pesto from my book, and the Cuban-Style Roasted Sweet Potatoes and the Chorizo Tacos...so yummy! Everyone loved them!  My parents came to the signing, and so did my mother-in-law and her husband, Ed. It was sweet!

I really wanted to go to Spread, Cilantro, and Nature's Express but there just wasn't enough time... there was also this place called Veg-N-Out that looked great for veggie burgers and hot dogs... I’ve never been there but it looked yum. And Peace Pies looked so cute and friendly, I would love to get a pie from them one day. How great is this picture from their website of this cute guy holding the pie.

That's all for now...
