OK...so i have googled nightshade vegetables and found plenty of backup to what Alicia's (incredibly wonderful) book says about joint inflamation. The nightshade family even includes tobacco!!! yuck! Perhaps this is why i am addicted to these foods?
Anyway, living in the 'deep south' and growing up in a mediterranean/cajun background- well you can guess i am sure what almost all veg dishes contain in one form or another! And yes there is a strong family background of arthritis. hmmmmm.
But how can i live without them?!
I also read that goji berries are included in the nightshade family but they have been proven to reduce joint inflamation. and i drink goji juice every day for it's benefits to keeping the blood's ph at a balance, boost immunity, etc.
My joint inflamation actually occurs when i eat corn, which i am very allergic to. Never when i eat the other foods.
I cannot imagine my kitchen totally devoid of these, especially peppers, and tomatoes. We don't eat a lot of potatoes, and i buy eggplant only in season, though i do crave it occasionally...like yesterday.
What am i gonna do?!?!?!
I have a holistic dr. hauschka remedy for menst. cramps-nicotiana cramp relief-
Nicotiana tabacum, well known as tobacco leaf, is a homeopathic remedy for cramps and vascular complaints.
French, I am the same way. I can't imagine staying away from these - I use peppers and tomatoes all the time! I think the best I can do right now is eat them less.
I have crohn's disease and I just started cutting out nightshades (this Summer). I had tons of eggplant, peppers and tomatoes from my garden and I had to avoid them!! I like to have them on occasion, but not every week, like I was.
OK, i am trying verrrry hard. The toughest one to avoid has been tomatoes. And peppers. And...oh who am i kidding! this is going to be the thing that keeps me down from superhero status. other than the nightshades, i am rockin' the grains and greens and lovin' it! But i will keep trying. Anyone else having success out there?
I love tomatoes and tomato juice. Eggplant I only like in certain dishes too.
I feel you on this one guys. I am just limiting my tomatoes. I don't think I can go totally without!
Tomatoes are one of my favorite foods! I love them! Sometimes though I get a burning sensation on my tongue and almost blisters if I eat them too much. I also get this with too much garlic or if I eat walnuts...
Allergy?
could be... or do you commonly put a particular dressing, or lemon juice or something on these foods? often foods we crave end up being foods we are allergic to. for me it is corn, i reeeally miss popcorn and grits and polenta...
I don't plan to stop eating tomatoes, they are high in lycopene which protects against breast and cervical cancer. I only eat them about once a week though.
The health benefits of tomatoes come from cooked tomatoes, not raw. If you cook the tomatoes you reduce some of it's acidity.
If you don't have serious joint problems, poor health, or a history of arthritis in your family, then having nightshades on a occasion is not going to kill you. But, if you want to be a superhero, giving them up is a good idea. It's a personal choice. Giving up white sugar would be the best thing you could do.
potatoes I can give up but heck I'm Italian and my step family is Mexican...it's all about the tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers!!! goodness me...cutting back I can do but I don't think my Italian Grandma will ever speak to me again if I tell her I won't eat her homemade sauce anymore, I already won't eat her cheese dishes, meatballs, and cheesecake...although maybe all that sauce is why she has had chronic arthritis...I guess you pick and choose what you would prefer to live with/out...arthritis or amazing food?
I have problems with my knees hurting. I have found that when I cut out all the nightshades they don't hurt much. But when I eat them now I can be certain they WILL hurt the next day. Including today from the peppers in theChipolte Blackbean burger I ate yesterday.
you sure it isn't corn making you hurt? corn is in almost everything, and my hips always throb if i eat it - but i am allergic to corn so i have to watch out for it all the time.
man, this is all so crazy!! i feel so proud of myself for not having any meat or dairy for 5 months (cold turkey) but giving up peppers and tomatoes!!!! that just doesn't even feel like an option. i do have joint pain, for sure. but wow.....this is gonna be a real challenge! i'm used to eating a pepper a day, and possible half a tomato. potatoes aren't that tough, i just steal the odd homefry out of the skillet when making them for my son and husband. so if their cooked their not as bad? is this right?
Michelle , I thought it was just me with my sore knees! Oh its so hard not to have potatoes or something with tomato in it. I had chips today at work and now I am paying for it. Next time I'm getting ready to go to work someone please remind me that I need to bring lunch from home and not rely on the kiosks around the sports ground.
