My allergies are gone!!!!!
I became a vegetarian a month ago and a vegan 3 weeks ago (from eating meat most meals).  I was taking a claritin or benedryl if it was bad almost every day because I would have intense sneezing fits and itchy eyes.  I didn't know what it was too, because it wasn't seasonal, usually indoors.  I have not needed another allergy pill since then!!!
Also I have exersize induced asthma.  Since I stopped exercising daily for sports, I had trouble running, even with my inhaler.  I had so much energy that I went running and I didn't feel any burning and I felt like I could breath deeper with no mucus.
I totally coughed up a lot of stuff during detox, but the end result has been completely amazing.  Push through any coughing or head cold symptoms in the begining.  I hope to make it through the winter with none of my chronic sinus and tonsil infections.
In conclusion, dairy is yucky and the kind diet is awesome.
Dairy is yucky and TheKindDiet is awesome!

Claire, you are really giving me hope in regards to my asthma.  I was, up until now, still working on going lacto-ovo vegetarian (because full on vegan seems daunting to someone who is still eating some occasional meat), but now, I even think I will not replenish any of the dairy I still have in my fridge, once it's gone.  I'll buy alternatives instead.

Maybe I can say goodbye to steroid inhalers (at $133 per month, OMG!) just by cutting out dairy, and that would be grand, since it's now cold enough outdoors and dry enough indoors to exacerbate my asthma!

I have really bad seasonal allergies and usually take a claritin every morning and a benadryl every evening just to keep things managable.  Does anyone have recommendations for seasonal allergy remedies?  I put a teaspoon of local honey on my oatmeal every morning (I know, its an animal product) but it doesn't seem to be helping much.  I would appreciate any suggestions!  Thanks in advance.
I have decreased dairy in my household gradually over the years and have observed allergies/asthma disappearing!  It definitely happens.  Great to see this posted on here.
There is an old saying in Traditional Chinese Medicine, dairy causes phlegm.  It is a common clinical outcome that avoiding dairy foods reduces auto immune reactions and their symptoms dramatically and quickly.

I am so hoping that this diet will get rid of my allergies. I am pretty certain that dairy is going to be the huge clarifier.
Claire, that's fantastic!  The same thing happened to me when I went vegan.  Before going vegan, I was on a steroid and rescue inhaler for asthma, and Claritin for allergies.  Now I'm off all medication and never have shortness of breath or a stuffy nose.  The worst thing that ever happens is itchy eyes.  Rhiannon, if you can cut out dairy for three weeks, I think you'll find your asthma is much improved.
TG, Dr. Fuhrman has a supplement for allergies you might try:http://www.drfuhrman.com/shop/PerillaSinus.aspx
I had allergies used to take OTC and an inhaler almost daily, over the last 3 years I have slowly cut dairy out of my diet, Most symptoms have gone away. Now there are days when I cannot resist a slice of cheese pizza but almost immediately the next day I without a doubt have allergies.
I have pet allergies and mild asthma too, especially exercise-induced. I've been off dairy for a couple of weeks and have noticed some improvement, but not 'dramatic' - looking forward to seeing if it clears up further.
PS, I never ate huge amounts of dairy to begin with, so that could be the reason my improvement wasn't dramatic.
OK...found the allergy/asthma blog, but still have questions. How does cutting out dairy help with asthma and allergies? I have had bad winters the past few years...even catching pneumonia last year. I am on so much asthma/allergy meds it's pathetic...and am now considering shots again to see if it will help control better. I know I need to lose weight too. Maybe I should just buy the book and try it myself...I read Claire's note and she noticed a change in about a month's time...is that about the length of time I should give myself to see if this is right for me? (How am I going to give up cheese!?!?!)
Hi, Kris! Justin is much better at answering this, but in a nutshell, dairy causes phlegm, and phlegm contributes to asthma and allergies and sinus infections.

I've definitely noticed that since cutting out dairy in early December, my allergies, while not gone completely, are definitely improved, and I have had only one sinus headache since then and I didn't need to miss work for it; it wasn't that bad (I used to get them about every two or three weeks, and often missed work as a result).

Reading about the horrible treatment of dairy cows, and the nasty results ending up IN THE MILK, was sufficient to nauseate me out of any interest in cheese, or even ice cream.
that's so awesome that your allergies have disappeared, Claire - and such great news on your exercised induced asthma subsiding as well! hooray! my spouse and i became vegan over two years ago and just a month after becoming vegan his allergies disappeared and his asthma did, too. he had been suffering from both since he was 4 and then totally vanished once becoming vegan. it just proves that dairy & other animal products = icky!
