Soy Formula?
I have had to supplement breast milk and I use this organic soy formula. I have seen it at babies r us as well.

Hi There!  I have to be very unvegan here, having worked NICU...breast milk is of course, the most superior food on earth...BUT,next to human milk, our sisters, the cows come pretty darn close...we are MUCH closer genetically to the cow than the soybean...Soy,because it is in EVERYTHING anymore, plus we eat so much more of it, has become potentially pro-estrogenic and goiterogenic (i.e.not for one if you have cancer in your family history or thyroid issues)...so soy is generally last choice for babies...and it can be rough on the tummy as well...

I don't think of it as "cheating" for the vegan moms I met, its actually finding a surrogate mom in this beautiful animal...having said THAT, I would certainly go for organic formula....

Blessings....
My granddaughter Miss Vivi was breastfed for her first few months until my daughter returned to work. Her work hours were so difficult (mall) that we switched Miss to formula. She was very unhappy with the dairy formula, lots of gas, fussiness, not sleeping, colic. So we switched her to soy formula and she did great. I think it was Enfamil brand which we could get at Walmart, Target and Kmart but it was more expensive. As a toddler we continued with soy milk which she loves and the whole family switched to soy milk as well. She loves the chocolate heated up, calls it coffeechino, so she can pretend to have the same as mom's cappachino. Her big brother was switched over and over to different formula's per his ped. one of which was soy. It was awful at the time, he's 18 now, but the new ones are really good and Miss didn't have any of the troubles her Bubba did. He also drinks soy milk now with no problems.
Michelle,
Thank you so much for this post.  I have a beautiful, healthy, thriving 9 month old son.  I breastfed exclusively for his first month, but unfortunately, he lost over a pound and was not gaining weight.  After consulting multiple times with my doctor and a lactation consultant, I had to supplement with formula.  I still breast fed as well until he was 6 months old (some is better than nothing, i figured).  After knowing what I know about the debate on phyto estrogens, I chose to supplement with organic formula (earth's best and kroger brand organic).

Your post was wonderful.  I have harbored a lot of guilt about not being able to breast feed my son and having to use cow formula, but the way you presented this post made me fee much better about the decisions I made.  Thank you!

we are much closer to goats than to cows...  dairy is a disaster for kids, but if you have to go that route goat milk is better than cow.
My first son I gave him Enfamil Lipil and he had collic and has exzema. Now at 6 I realize he had a milk allergy and since cutting dairy from his diet, major improvements! My second son had soy formula and he is doing so well. I guess when I was a a first time mom I was so clueless. In my opinion soy is a great choice and works for our family!

The main theme throughout here seems to be that different things for work different kids. I would definately encourage you to bring it up w/ your kids' doctor and make sure that your decisions will be supported. Then, if necessary, start with the formula you would like to use, but be open to change if necessary. Most companies will send you free samples via their websites. Track your baby's progress, keep your doctor informed, and make the decision then. If you try to make all the decisions beforehand, you'll just stress yourself out.

Also, Michelle, thanks so much for the insight of a NICU nurse.
