'Sensitive' re Sugar
Hi,

I was just wondering if sugar can be a cause of indigestion & wind? Over the past year or so, I've been suffering from indigestion a lot more often, and I can't remember the last time I wasn't burping all evening. I've been trying to work out why I keep getting this, and it's worse when I've eaten crisps a few days in a row, so I've cut them back to having them only rarely. This has helped a bit, but not enough to make a big difference. So, as sugar is something I eat in foods everyday, I'm wondering if it could be linked?

Thanks,
K
Hi Monkeysocks,
Are crisps fried potatoes? If so it may be the oil. Many food manufacturers use cheap poorly digestible oils and even trans fats. Unless they were flavored with a sugary topping I would first suspect oil.

Yep, crisps are effectively fried potatoes. I eat them very rarely though, which is why I don't think they're the main cause. I'd say I probably have one or two bags a month if at all, and I also eat them when there's nibbles round at my family & friends houses. That's when my indigestion is worse, so I know they aggrevate me, but I've known that they don't agree with me for years! (hence why I hardly have them). But saying it could be oil is interesting... My boyfriend uses quite a bit of oil when making our veggie stir-fry (and I don't like to citicise him, as it's the only thing he can cook that's not got meat in it), and I do tend to feel icky after that. It's something I'll have to take more notice of and see what happens...

Thanks,
K x

Actually the potatoes and the rice in the stir fry could be causing your sensitvity because they both turn into sugar really fast. I cannot eat them because I am diabetic and they cause blood sugar spikes.
