Vegan Cheese...REALLY?

I tried Daiya today and it *was* tasty, but it looks like it doesn't have any nutritional value, i.e. it's not actually a protein source (1g  protein), so I don't know that I'll buy it again after I finish it.

Agree the FYH wasn't ideal -- it was sort of chalky and gave me a bit of a headache.

Ok...Finally my local Whole Foods got in Daiya cheese.  Pure vegan and so many of you rave about it!  I bought the mozerella...and it smelled and tasted like the "artificial butter flavor" on microwave popcorn.  Does it to any of you?  I guess I'm going to have to go cheese-less.  smiley-frown.gif

I just tried the Daiya cheese on an eggplant perm. type dish - it was delicious.

Ok.  My daughter and I tried it in our vegan tacos...granted mozerella is not usually found in tacos, but we put a bite's worth in to see... :-/.  I miss cheddar and apples too!  That was one of my favorite snacks!  I'm leery because vegan cheese isn't inexpensive and if we are not going to eat it, it's a waste of money.  I'll try it on homemade pizza...

@ Amy - I am so with you on the Daiya Mozz cheese tasting like butter!  When I went in to grab a pinch of it (like I normally would have with regular cheese), it tasted like someone shredded butter and coated it in flour.

I tried the FYH in a quesadilla, and it tasted so bad even though I had refried beans, habaneros, grilled corn, and guacamole on it that I had to open up the tortilla and scrape out the cheese.

I was an avid cheese lover, but sometimes you have to wonder what type of science are they doing to make these cheeses.....

I don't mind Daiya, but my favorite is Teese. You can make "mozzarella sticks" with it, or make it into cheese sauces like ballpark nachos come with and it's delish!  However, I use it very sparingly...I can buy it, cut it into 5 or 6 blocks, and freeze them and only use a tiny amount at a time.  If I'm craving something cheesy, I'll try to sub it with something creamy...like spreading guacamole or hummus on something instead of a slice of cheese.  It is the perfect fix for this former cheese-addict's cravings!

@ Dolores---I'm glad I'm not being too persnickity!  Maybe I will try the cheddar and see if that is any different.  I bought some nutritional yeast because of the yummy-looking corn chowder recipe Alica posted...sounded fabulous!  If I can get a good flavor, then maybe I won't need to have the "cheese" after all!  Thanks everyone!  If there are anymore suggestions I would love to hear them!

@ Amy - Let me know how that corn chowder turns out!  I've been thinking about trying it out...

I agree that the Daiya tastes TERRIBLE straight out of the package, but it is a much different story when it is melted.  I picked up a few bags the last time I was at the health food store (which is over an hour away from my house) and was dissapointed when I got it home and tried it.  But, I decided not to give up on it just yet, so I made 2 eggplant and onion pizzas and did one with the Daiya and one with regular cheese (my nonvegan best friend was visiting).  Well, the cheese pizza was wasted because she ate most of mine!  When melted, Daiya has kind of a nutty taste and is very creamy.  I would love to try the Teese that was mentioned above, but I have yet to locate it.  I have very limited resources where I live.

Daiya is NOT good unless melted!!! And you're right, it totally stinks. Gotta say though, when I'm craving a grilled cheese (which I miss oh so much) the cheddar works great. I've tried several of the other "cheeses" and none of them are as good in either flavor or meltyness. I'm not a big fan of the mozzarella though...

I make fabulous quesadillas with daiya cheddar style cheese, like everyone says, you must melt it. I love it on pizzas, even a pizza joint near by uses it on the vegan option of pizza they offer, it is so good! It's great in burritos too. I love it, but yes, you must melt it to really fully get the best of it!

I'm surprised so many people don't like the taste of uncooked Daiya!  I LOVE it!  I could eat it straight out of the bag (and often do on occasion).  I've also found Tofutti makes great vegan cheese slices.  I use those on sandwiches and even my non/partially vegan boyfriend likes them.  I most recently tried Teese, when they were out of the shredded Daiya cheddar, I bought the tube of Teese, and really liked that as well!  I've just been so happy to find vegan cheeses that I actually like as much, if not more, than dairy cheese I used to eat so much of before going vegan about a year ago.  Cheese was the #1 thing I missed, and now I don't miss it anymore!  Yaye!!

Gosh folks.....really.  You will NEVER find a non cheese product that tastes just like your beloved cheese.  It doesn't exist.  Here's where you make your decisions.  Commit to a vegan NO dairy lifestyle or be happy that a different type of product (vegan cheese) is available to you.  I see no good coming from hanging on to an emotional attachment to one particular food.  I use all the fake cheese in cooking and am very happy with them.  But I never stood in front of my fridge and cut off huge hunks of dairy cheese and ate it....so maybe that's the difference.  There are so many wonderful foods to eat.....mourning one food will only bring you unhappiness and dissatifaction.
