For Alicia and anyone else...what are you doing in regards to supplementing your infants with vitamin D?  Thanks!

I'm posting this questions because there isn't a vegan source of infant vitamin D drops.  I know I can take mega doses while breast feeding, but wanted to see what other moms are doing.  Thanks!

Hi Sara! We live in sunny Cali so we don't take a vitamin supplement.  If you are breastfedding your baby only needs your milk, not any supplements. So I've heard.  A mother's milk contains everything that your baby needs until theyare ready for food.  I hope you find the info you need.

I did not give it to my son . I resent all the claptrap doctors try to pile into babies .  My son is in great shape , almost 5 now. I breastfed till he was almost 2 yrs old .  If you can do this its fantastic...........

I was seriously vit D deficient while I was breastfeeding, even though I took lots of vit D. My nutritionist (my DR was no help on this) said it was because my body was putting all the vit D into my breastmilk, where it was needed most. She breastfeed until she was 3 1/2, at that point my vit D levels started coming back up and they are back to normal now, almost a year after she quit breastfeeding. Still no thanks to my doctor!

So I would say up your own vit D supplimenting, have your levels checked (I have to get mine done every 3 months) and keep breastfeeding as long as you can. You can't overdose on vit D, you just pee out the excess.

My father is a natropath and he told me that they tested the lifeguards in cali and even they were vitamin D defficiant. We do supplement Vitamin D for our kids, its way to important not to.

Yes I did for my son.. and I found out in July that I was Vit D deficient. this can cause a lot of bad things.. so I started supplementing and will get re-checked in a few months. I also give my 2 year old son a supplement (drop) too. I agree, it's too important not to. Unfortunately breastfeeding provides everything except the Vit D

I read somewhere (can't remember the source though, sorry) that babies have a Vit D store for about 3 months when they are born. We live in Quebec and my daughter was born in december and I only started supplementing with the drops when she was 3 months old and only during days she was not going out for a 'sun bath'.
