Finding reasonably priced healthy food in Ontario Canada

Hi,
I just discovered a store here in Newmarket, Ontario called Nature's Emporium. It is GREAT. I was having a hard time finding some ingredients for my 'Kind Life' recipes but I found them very easily at Nature's Emporium! I was so excited. Loblaws Supercentres have an Organic Aisle where I found a few ingredients also. Bulk Barn also sells some items. Good luck.
Loblaws and Real Canadian Superstores have a good supply of organic items and in their "Blue Menu" line.  Are you in the Toronto area?  If so try Whole Foods as you can find alot of items to make the recipes from the Kind Diet book.  Also the St. Lawrence Market has alot of organic items too.

I am finding it more difficult to find the "healthy" foods.  I spend my time travelling from store to store and either something isn't in stock, they have no idea what I'm talking about or the cost is outrageous.  I'm in Nova Scotia so all we have is the Atlantic Superstore, Sobeys and a small Planet Organic that is about an hour return trip from where I live.  I would think I died and went to heaven if we could get a Whole Foods somewhere close by.

Vanessa, where are you in Ontario?   I go to fortinos, most have a section with the food we want.  I ask them to get things in that I need.   Every couple months I travel the half hour drive to Oakville where the whole foods is and pick upi stuff I can't get around here.

I eat what is available to me, try not to get caught up in driving around trying to find everything.  Talk to store managers about getting things in,
Hi there, i'm in the same boat. Can anyone recommend a site or database available that might list what the 'staples' items you should have in your pantry. I would like to go out once a month or so and spend the time to get the hard to find items. I'm just starting this 'life' approach but being a truly typically 'canadian family' I am so not familiar with a lot of the vegetables, sea vegie and stuff. I would like to be as prepared as possible to avoid any pitfalls!
Hey Andrea,  do you ever go to Goodness me on the mountain, upper Gage?  They have a pretty good selection.  It's has to be closer than Whole Foods.
Andy, I go to goodness me sometimes, but the selection isn't near as awesome as whole foods in oakville.   Plus its nice to grab lunch at their hot food bar while I'm there.

Natasha, some items that are good to have in your pantry...
-quinoa
-brown rice
-lentils
-chick peas
-barley (i like pearl)
-other beans.

most of these things are easy enough to find, I even found organic prewashed quinoa at Costco last week.

eden organics has a great website, they have some great quinoa pastas and such like that and know that they ship.
Whole foods and Fortinos are great places to go. The only Whole foods near me is in oakville which is about 20-30 minutes away from where I live so I only get there once in a while but Fortinos is a great alternative =]
I know this isn't my post, but im having diffculities in finding places that have organic products from clothing to food. I'm in St.Catharines, which is approxmatilly 15minutes away from Niagara falls
Tessa, try Zehrs.  they are a loblaws chain, they shoul dhave a lot of selection.  they did when i lived in St.Catharines.

Talysha, where are you?
thanks for the info/help! i have the 'common' staples as in the grains. It just seems like the majority of the vegan recipes out there have all these 'exotic' and unheard of ingredients (to me anyway, but i come from a carnivourous sugar and caffeine inudated background!). Sometimes i don't feel like i am being a true "vegan/vegitarian' because i am not exploring with some of the recipes. Like honestly beofre this book, i would have never, ever  have purchased a daikon or nori, mush less even know what the heck it is. Okay, honestly, still don't
really know how and when to use either! arrgghhh i feel like a vegan wannabe imposter!
I'm new at this...also in Canada and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of items available at Zehrs...
I Live in London and every gorcery store here has some items but the Ral Canadian Superstore is great --- we also have a Lyn Dys health food store that is small but they carry just about everything you need !
