Yay Claire!! I find I always feel better when I'm dairy (and gluten) free!  Great inspiration for me to keep with it!
Yay Claire!  So happy to hear your success story.

I've given up dairy for a week now, and can already feel the difference in my sinuses. It's like someone blowtorched them open -- it's great. And I had this constant nose-running thing, which was embarrassing. I recently had to stop in the middle of job interview to go get a tissue!

Here's my question though....in trying to switch out of dairy, I've been reading up and there's a lot of confusing and conflicting information about safety of soy. Anyone have the latest scoop???

Yes, Yes, and YES.

I'm loving all of this, and I'm loving the community here!

XOXO

Lori - as far as I know, it's just another case of us goofing things up.  Soy is fine at about 3-5 times a week, but we tend to replace EVERYTHING with soy - milk, cheese, meat - then we've just got another version of overdosing - and that combined with the over production, gmo's, and pesticides can make for a pretty wicked combo.  So just use rice and almond and wheat proteins where you can (cheese, milk, meat replacement items like Field Roasts etc), and do your best to ensure that what you put into your body is organic and non-gmo-ified (increasingly difficult since their pollen gets around, but - hey, ya do what ya can, right?  :)

Hope that helps!
Hey that's so cool!  By the way, I have been having a great winter and managed to get through a flu with no major sinus or tonsil infection and no cocktail of antibiotics/steroids/extra asthma meds!  which for me is a major accomplishment for me and proof that this lifestyle has really made a change in my body.

That is so cool! I bought this book a few days ago and decided to go vegan. I can't believe how good I feel already! Congrats to you Claire and everyone else on "The Kind Diet"!
Claire your story is so inspiring. Congratulations! I have developed allergies to my dog after I moved out of my mom's house and I had to leave him with her. (my apt. doesn't allow dogs) I am hoping these allergies eventually go away, once I transition into being vegan.
You know, the same thing happened for me. I have had asthma since I was in 6th grade, stopped eating dairy and within a week, no more problems.

Bit of a disconcerting sitch though: went to my local organic healthfood store, all happy about this discovery, and the woman there told me that people can't stay on plant based diets for very long. She also told me that I should drink Kefir (which she was selling, BTW), and that usually, it is a gluten problem that causes allergies in the first place. Umm, I thought celiac's disease was very rare. Anyway, I'm not a doctor, but I know what worked for me. Dairy=eewy.
Yay Claire--now get back with us in say 3-mos & let us know if you're "still" on the narrow vegan road! I like hearing tales of longevity! cool.
Awesome Claire! congrats. While i walked into the vegan-way without any real health issues, i can totally notice the effects on no dairy, and luv it. When folks ask me how it is going, i tend to talk more about the dairy aspect! kudos to you and everyone.
@Linda: drop a copy of The China Study to your local health food store. That book likely contains for more information that they know. I am seriously considering buying it and Alicia's book for everyone close to me..
I was going to walk away from this place because no one ever responds to my inquiries, but, these inspiring stories are very nice to hear; it just keeps me coming back! For inspiration to carry on I guess. So, what about dairy farmers? If the world was to stop drinking yucky milk? Please don't take this suggestion the wrong way, BUT, how about breast milk from humans? Could that supplement old style dairy products? And it would create alot of jobs!

I am really inspired by this story and hope that one day my allergies are going to go away too. I have been a vegan since January 2, 2010 and I feel awesome but unfortunetly my allergies are still a significant part of my life. Hope to get rid of them, though.
I don't eat any soy.  I think it depends on your "constitution" as people used to say, but yes a little goes a long way and everything in this culture is processed insanely including soy.  There are so many great protein options out there these days and well, it's just another things to slice off the list.

I have been soy free for about 8 years, vegetarian for 20 and vegan for a few months.  It is amazing how much "cleaner" I feel and how much easier it is to breathe even tho I never once questioned how cleanly I  breathed.

If you want any info on soy check out the Mothering Magazine article on soy from about http://www.mothering.com/food/whole-soy-story#

Good luck and Many Cheers & Peace to you all!
