Falafel distaster!!
Okay, so I tried making falafel  from a recipe I got off the web yesterday...well, I ended up with a very tasty hummus, but definitely not falafel!  Any recipes for this tasty treat out there?!
I would love to get a good vegan recipe for this as well...let me know if you find one please.

Hey, I think I can help. I sorta created my own little falafels last week...not completely perfect but worth a try.
You'll need:
1 16 oz can of chick peas
1/2 red onion
1/4 cup cilantro and parsley (amount is before chopping)

garlic

salt and pepper

canola oil

flour ( I use rice flour, its healthier plus I have too)

First boil water in a pot, once boiling reduce the heat to a simmer and add chickpeas. Simmer for 5 min.

In the meantime chop all ingrediants, including garlic. The amount is up to you, I used two cloves because I really like garlic.

Then remove chickpeas and drain. Transfer to a bowl and mash with a potatoe masher.  Then add chopped ingrediants and salt and pepper.  Once all mixed together use your hands to make round balls. Should make 6 or so
Next heat canola oil in a pan. Oil should be deep enough to only cover half of the falafel ball, I found that if it covers the whole thing it breaks apart and is too oily. It seems to work out better if you do fry one side at a time.  You can tell if the oil is hot enough by add a pinch of flour and checking that it curls up and frys quickly.
Roll balls lightly in some flour and place in the heated oil, once brown turn over. Then place on a plate with a bit of toweling underneath. Make sure not to over crowd the pan or it won't work.
Hope this help! Like I said not perfect but taste yummy!
Enjoy!

I cheat and use the Fantastic Foods box mix.  I think all you have to add is water, maybe a little oil and then you can bake or fry it.  I know it's not ideal but it is so easy and tastes amazing!
I also have a yummy vegan yogurt dip to go with these if you are interested:)

been looking for a yogurt dip, please post

Yogurt dip: kinda greek style

plain vegan yogurt. I like the Nogurt over the soy yogurt.
cucmber
mint
cumin

peel the cucumber then grate
add some chopped mint or jarred mint (but that is very hard to find organic I find)
add to the yogurt with a 1tsp cumin
and stir.

the amounts depend on how much you want to make. i usually use half of one of the big yogurts and keep it in the fridge for the week.
and then with that i use half a cucmber and a handful of mint.  if you want you can also add some garlic to make it like a tzatziki but be aware that the garlic only gets stronger in the mix the longer it sits.
The is good with pita chips or any veggies or along side the falafels.
try it out, play around with it !:)
Thanks so much for the falafel recipe!!  I'm definitely going to try it that way next time...maybe tonight!
There is a recipe for Falafel in THE VEGAN TABLE cookbook. It also includes a recipe for sauce. It looks good, but I have not tried it yet.
There is also a recipe for Falafel in Vegan with a Vengeance, haven't tried it yet but Isa's recipes are all really good.
I have made the Vegan with a Vengeance recipe several times and it is great (easy, too).
