Getting fit...without the gym?

I was wondering what you guys thought about getting fit without going to the gym (ex: DVDs, books, making your own routines, etc.). I just got married a few weeks ago and for about 1-2 months leading up to the wedding I was super nervous and anxious and I used those feelings to eat. In the past 3 or so months I've gained about 25 pounds. I would like to get fit and gain some muscle. Just feel better all the way around. I'm not so much worried about the weight, just getting healthy and exercising more. Any thoughts??

Hooping, Kettle Balls, and TONS of other things can be done at home!  I love my hoop and my kettle balls, and I also am addicted to my Biggest Loser for Wii Fit game!  I have a gym in my apartment, but I've used it like, 3 times...I usually just work out without the gym!

You can absolutely get fit without the gym!  I've done this pretty much my whole adult life on and off and to supplement my other workouts.  I would just find something you like and shoot for 4-5 workouts a week.  If I'm trying to lose weight, 5 workouts seems to be my magic number, but everyone's different of course.  Good luck! :)

hey jess ! dont know where ur from but if u have comcast cable by n e chance u can go on demand n go on exercise tv n they have everything on there-cardio dancing yoga etc-all free so u can try out lots of stuff n c what fits u best !

Hello Jess,

You can be fit without gym at home...i have also done this..so i suggest you to do yoga at your home & if you want it to be really effective then do it regularly becase if you can't be regular then it won't be much effective.Yoga not only make us fit also making us feel fresh & healthy...so i think you should try that..

I also believe that yoga is the answer! I have practiced for 12 years, add to it a brisk daily walk and your vegetarian/vegan diet and you should be on your way!

I like going on runs in the morning, or riding my bike to a cafe.

They both have great benefits:

Morning runs = set your day off to a great start and you rise with the sun so you feel one with the pace of the day usually. --only thing is you feel like the girl at the beginning of Law and Order, the one who always ends up dead. Lol! So make sure it's a safe area, first.

Bike ride to a cafe = get exersice in and get a treat once you get to the cafe, and the ride back eases your mind of worries about having eaten calorie-packed food. --only thing is that you have to figure out how to carry your wallet and/or cell phone with you.

But those are my favorite b/c they get me outside and i feel great for the rest of the day.

Hi Jessica, I have been exercising at home for the past 4 months, I started with Tony Horton's Power 90 and now I've moved on to the P90X (I ordered my stuff from Beachbody.com).  Also my sweetie Grant and I ride our bikes on the weekends, I plot our routes on Dailymile.com and then I know how far we traveled. I walk almost everyday at lunch with a group of co-workers and we have walked a little over 88 miles this summer so far (I also plot our routes on Dailymile.com for that as well).  Also I started tracking my food on Lance Armstrong's website Livestrong.com - which I think is as good as weight watcher's online service but better because it is free!

I have a lifetime membership to 24hr fitness but after a neck injury I gained 42 lbs over 2 years and because I am too embarassed and ashamed at my self I dont want my spin buddies to see me this way (I know it sounds stupid).  I just dont want to go back to the gym until I am back to where I was before.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the very best!

Checking out that dailymile website...thanks for posting that!  I'm excited to start logging on it!

if you like dancing Zumba is Latin style aerobics . you can burn about 1000 calories in an hour and you hardly know your working out because the music is so invigorating. You can go to Zumba .com for more info . Good luck on your journey. Just find an excercise you like . Zumba is often refered to as  excercose in desguise.

I just found something the works for me. I take a 1hr walk/jog every morning with one of my dogs be myside. I never thought I could do this becuase it's so early in the morning. But after I push myself out of bed I put on my walking shoes, get my dog ready and head out the door. I have so much more energy during the day and I feel so good about myself. It;s amazing the difference I feel about taking my walk in the morning too. I always take walks after work. But I never felt different. The morning makes them so much more powerful and peaceful. It's just me, my dog, and the world.

Hoopnotica.com I am totally addicted to it. I have lost 7 pounds in 3 weeks. I hoop for about 1-2 hours every day. It is my new addiction. I really respect the company as well. You should check them out.

Try www.bodyrock.tv , it's an amazing site that uses mainly body weight exercises/circuits that you can do at home ( in fact they pride themselves on NOT needing a gym to get fit!). I love the site, and I'm sure you all will too!

PS - the workouts are between 12-30 minutes each day! :) ENJOY!

Hi Jessica,

Last year I took up long distance walking - it's free, easy and you get to see all the beauty of nature around you. Since I started that and watching what I eat, I've lost over 2 stone and walked two and a half marathons for charity. I regularly walk 2-4 miles a day and then one 6-8 mile and one 10-14 mile per week. If there is somewhere safe for you to walk then give it a go - even better if you have a friend who will go with you :-)

I also wanted to make the suggestion for those of you who have Netflix and can live stream to your tv (I stream through my Wii player).  You can stream fitness dvd's straight to your tv until you find one that works for you.  I recently have gotten hooked on a danceaerobics dvd that I'm now streaming and doing almost daily...and I didn't even have to buy the dvd!
