Getting "Type O Blood" warnings.....??????

Okay, So I just went vegan a few weeks ago, and I am being told that it could be dangerous since I have type O blood. Has anyone heard about this? Is it true???

Lydia,

The blood type diet has no basis in either science or tradition. As far as I can tell it was entirely made up by the author. There is simply no peer reviewed evidence that blood type has any effect on metabolism or assimilation.

You can safely ignore it like many other fads.

Justin

Lydia, I have type O blood and I've never felt better since becoming vegan. I've also just had lots of blood tests for my annual check up and the only deficiency I have is Vitamin D (along with everyone in the northern hemisphere, vegan or not!) I was tested for B12, Iron, Cholesterol and all sorts of other stuff I don't understand. I'm super healthy. I wouldn't worry about it. I'd go more on how you feel.

Lydia, I have Type O blood as well and feel fantastic!  I had many health issues before becoming vegan, and have eliminated all symptoms of an illness I was told there was no cure for.  I agree with Justin.  Only you know how you feel when you eat a certain way.  Your body will let you know if you are doing something it doesn't like.  :)

As everyone else said, I'm type O and my life has only improved since going vegan!  The guy who started the whole "blood type diet" phenomenon is a man with an anti-vegetarian agenda.  He's been called out on many occasions for this.  Don't even worry about blood type/veganism!

Thank you for all of the responses! It's only been a couple of weeks, but I swear I already feel better!

I agree with the others.  I'm type O and have been Veg for 12 years with on and off Vegan... I feel my best when completely Vegan and even better when mostly Raw.

I've never read the blood type book, but I haven't found that statement to be true for me.

Hi Lydia,

Coming from a clinical dietitian, there is no scientific basis for the blood type diet. It makes my blood boil when I hear people giving dietary recommendations based on the Blood type diet. Go this link to get the facts...for your next run in with a Blood diet devotee....

Then again there is various studies to back up the benefits of vegetarian diets.

Hope this helps!

Yeah- I was told this as well last summer when I went from a flirt to vegan (the first time) for 30 days.  Truthfully, I felt a bit bloated and crappy and went to a health store to try to figure out what I was doing wrong. The lady said because of my blood type O, I needed more protein and needed to eat lots of sea vegetables and cut way back on yummy vegan processed foods (I was hardcore lovin' the vegan pizza at whole foods, pretzels dipped in hummus, and Liz Lovely snickerdudes!) She suggested I start drinking Vega shakes to help me meet my protein needs. Really terrific advice she gave, though the blood type bit was really annoying.

Either way, I'm back to vegan (from flirt) for good. And I feel great this time. I do eat sea vegetables at least 4 days a week and I very rarely eat sugary treats or high-carb processed snacks. I drink Vega about 4-5 days a week too, mainly because its great tasting, filling, and convenient but I usually meet my protein needs through grains, seeds, legumes, etc. without it.

I wish that dumb blood type diet would disappear!

This is so funny to me!  I actually started checking into the Vegan lifestyle originally because I am Blood Type A!!!  Just had to chuckle!!

Well the blood type diet is just what different peoples blood acidity and alkaline properties due to were they live and the food indigenous there.  So asian people usually have type AB.  So they ate alot of fish and virtually no dairy.  So someone hundreds of years later that is asian that grew up in LA may be predisposed to be lactive.  Same as type O.  Most type O's were our ancesters that grew up in the planes on milk and meat.  But that doesnt mean we have to eat what our ancestors did.  And the more alkaline your system is the better.  There is even a new blood type.  Type C.  From all the chemicals and sugars.
