Green Smoothies!!!

OK, so I'm still pretty new to this lifestyle.  I've been worried about calcium since due to some medical stuff I'm at higher risk for austio.  And I gotta say, I'm not a huge fan of the leafy green.  I only seem to like them sauteed in oil with salt and pepper, which is not great for weight loss.  This morning I finally tried a green smoothie (I'm drinking it right now).  The thought of it sounded completely gross to me.  But it is YUM!  I can totally see drinking this every morning, and starting my day with a bit hit of greens.  I'm so glad I tried.  I used:

3 big kale leaves

A big handful of spinach

1/2 banana

A handful of raspberries and blueberries

a drizzle rice syrup

a good splash soy milk

a handful ice

What do you put in your green smoothies?

Kim

spinach, kale or chard, parsley, cucumber, banana, orange, apple or pear, carrots, broccoli, sometimes celery, and ice.  We loooove our green smoothies too!

I LOVE my green smoothies!!!

I like to use Coconut Water for my liquid and Ice.

I always use a Banana, lots of spinach or kale, and Apple...

Then depending on what else I have in the house, I'll add other fruits, veggies and seeds.

I love green smoothies too! Try this one...

1 whole orange, peeled

1/2 frozen banana

2 handfuls of frozen berries

1-2 handfuls of spinach

a little water as needed for consistancy desired.

Throw the whole orange in the blender, minus the peel obviously. add everything else and blend, adding a little water to thin and blend if needed. Thats it! no sweeteners are needed. Its my favorite and so easy!

I just finished my first green smoothie.  Wow, it was so good.  my 8 year old just ran by and said "that smoothie rocked!"

2 c of almond milk

1/4 c oats

1 TBSP flax meal

2 TBSP protein powder

1 tsp cinnamon

1 3/4 frozen berries, I did a mix of strawberries & blackberries

1 c fresh spinach

It was really good!

Congrats Amy on your first Green Smoothie!  :-)  There is no turning back now!  hee hee

Did you use a regular blender or juicer or a vitamix type of blender?

I just used my blender.  It works really well, just takes a few minutes to really mix everything up.  I am loving the frozen berries - makes it very slushy.

My favorite green smoothie is kale, 1 apple, 1 banana, a bit of almond or soy milk and some ice.

Amy - this may sound like a dumb question, but did you cook the oats first?

No.  Not a dumb question either.  I put the oats & flax seed in the blender first.  Since they are closest to the blade theny blend up really well.  I actually made another one this weekend without oats - just as good.  I guess it would depend on if yo want a full meal or just a nice snack.

Hi Kim,

I’m an avid green smoothie drinker; it’s one of the best ways to get lots of fresh greens into your diet. I have several recipes on my blog: http://nickyintheraw.blogspot.com/

Vega (by Brendan Brazier) has a great vegan smoothie infusion where it is a powder full of really  great stuff ~ then you just add liquid (I use Earth's Own almond milk) and whatever berries you want.  The greens are in the mix...it is really good and I'm not normally a fan of mixes.  This one is gluten and dairy free which is great for me!  Just an idea for you...good luck!

do you cook the kale or throw it in raw?

what does it taste like?  is it fruity?

I throw all my greens in raw to get the most nutrient value.  As long as I balance with fruity stuff, I don't even taste the greens.
