Hi! Where can we get those gorgeous brooms!
Hi! Where can we get those gorgeous brooms!
I love those! They're the only brooms we had when I was a kid.
Off to the hardware store.
:)
I just bought one a couple of months ago and don't understand why I ever stopped using them in the first place. I think Phillipe Starck should have been tasked to make a broom from corn because his plastic ones don't work that well (the last broom I had was his design).
Great industrial design is about form and function working together in harmony, and the corn broom is a perfect example. Not to mention that it just looks cool leaned up against the wall, sounds beautiful going across the floor like a jazz drummers brush across a snare drum and dust and dirt don't stick to the bristles so your hands stay clean as well!
Thank you for posting this great old tool that has withstood the test of time despite the fact that I strayed from it for too long.
First you can use your corn broom for sweeping and then Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day All-Purpose cleaner to scrub your floors. I love the Lavender. It has a nice relaxing scent and I always get compliments on how shiny my floors look.
I needed a broom! Great idea-- I think my gram always used a corn broom!
I don;t know why I didn't think to try the hardware store for a broom. I really dislike the plastic brooms and don't feel like they do a good job, so I am definitely going to stop-off at the hardware store and get a good old-fashioned broom...I have to go there and buy new heater filters anyway :-)

I have so many tips that I decided to creat a whole DIY kit! We make all of our own products and our house smells great! You can use almost any essential oil, but lavender, pine and lemon work the best.

My favorite eco-house cleaning tip? You can clean just about ANYTHING with baking soda and/or white vinegar. It's friendly to your wallet as well as the environment. I am also a big fan of concentrated castile soap...and corn brooms.
You could go to an Asian market which have these eco-friendly brooms for probably a lot cheaper. We have these in my house which we have used ever since I was little. Asian tradition, I guess?
@Elizabeth, woah there eighty bucks for a "DIY"?
I like to make homemade febreeze and spray it everywhere...especially on the dog beds! Just mix 1.5-4 tablespoons of an animal-friendly fabric softener with 25 ounces of water in a spray bottle (spot check any light fabrics).
I picked up one of those brooms from the hardware store yesterday. $6 !
So happy. :)
Great tip. I love these types of finds. I will definitely grab one!
I found one with a wooden handle at Lowe's for really cheap. I own a small concession type trailer (we have a full vegan menu!) and needed a broom that was small but sturdy ... found ours for under $5 if i remember correctly. I also have an Amish one that my sister gave me as a wedding gift, I use it as a besom for my rituals so cleaning is off limits, although a naiive houseguest once took it out of my sacred space and started cleaning the stoop with it (grr.) That one is BEAUTIFUL! the bristles are multi coloured and were dyed with natural, veggie dyes and the metal used to connect the "working end" to the handle have been covered with a lovely, woven cornhusk covering.
Love these!
