kind classics: eco bathrooms

A good tip on when to flush is "If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down." Also I found the best totally non toxic all purpose cleaner ever. It's a concentrate and you mix it with water in the included spray bottles. It has no odor whatsoever. It is so non toxic that if a new born baby drank some, it would have no ill effects. It is made totally from plants. you can read more about it at www.greenvirginproducts.com. I love all their products. They don't sell anything that contains toxic chemicals or is harmfull to the environment.

Do you check products before promoting them on your site? Simple green is not safe at all, in fact in cotains Formaldehyde. I appreciate what your trying to do with your website and promote greener and vegan living but some of the products mention on your site are not safe at all.

For information about unsafe chemicals used in simple green please visit http://www.ewg.org/schoolcleaningsupplies/cleaningsuppliesoverview?id=209&gclid=CL7Krti1_KoCFQdN4Aodo1KD4w

You can also try "family cloth," cloth wipes for baby and family. I make my own wipes solution with 1 pint water, water, 2 drops of tea tree oil, 10 drops of lavender oil, a squirt of witch hazel, and a squirt of jojoba oil. I keep the wipes in an old baby wipes container. Or check out Kissaluvs diaper solution. I also have a stack of dry wipes on the back of the toilet. I admit that I only use cloth for the mellow yellow. Green Mountain Diapers sells the perfect size double sided cloth wipes, but my mom also made a stack of double side cloth wipes with cotton and terry cloth. Some people use old t-shirts, flannel, or underwear cut into nice size rectangles.

I've read that Simple Green is pretty toxic!  In fact, we used some to clean our deska at work and it made someone sick.  but I do love all of the stuff that you post!  Thanks for all of your helpful info!  smiley-smile.gif

I just use white vinegar to clean my sink, toilet bowl (exterior), and mirror.  Having used it for a while, I think the smell of vinegar is clean and refreshing!  I put it in an old spray bottle so it sprays like any other cleaner.

For my fiberglass shower, I recently tried Bon Ami powder and W O W!  It's never been so clean!!!   It has a little abrasion sortof like SoftScrub but way better since it's safe and just plain works like a dream.  Bon Ami is biodegradable, non-toxic and hypo-allergenic.  They sell other cleansers as well!

Quick non-bathroom tip: for my black glass kitchen range top, the ONLY product that will clean it to shiny clean is white vinegar!  You might be tempted to use soap first, because that range is oily, but DON'T!  Just spray the vinegar, wipe, and be amazed!  :)

Here's an article pointing out you only 6 ingredients to replace most of your cleaners, they're all natural & at the end of his article he posts other links for further research:

Baby wipes??!  If you are promoting an eco-friendly lifestyle why would you suggest having disposable products - toxic or not?  A good old-fashioned face cloth works just as well (BETTER in my opinion) and without all the chemicals.

A spray bottle with 1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar in a spray bottle work VERY WELL for an air freshener.  Used directly on fabrics it gets out stubborn odors (check in an inconspiquous place for color-safety, although I have NEVER had a problem).

I agree with Ely Mock:

"Do you check products before promoting them on your site? Simple green is not safe at all, in fact in cotains Formaldehyde. I appreciate what your trying to do with your website and promote greener and vegan living but some of the products mention on your site are not safe at all."

Alicia, thanks to you, I am a vegan again.  I loved your book and I love this site. Kudos!  That said, Ely has a point (as well as the others who posted comments).  In my quest to live a more well grounded green life, I created a blog http://girrlearth.com for my friends and family to post ideas on how to live more green.  One major step I made in going green was to remove toxic chemicals from my home. Now I only clean with baking soda and vinegar or diluted vinegar and water. My house smells great and I no longer worry about exposing myself, my husband or our 6 cats to harsh chemicals.

Currently, my issue with household cleaners is: Swiffer.  I do not even want to know what types of chemicals are in Swiffer. Furthermore, has anyone noticed just how much shelfspace Swiffer consumes vs. Method or 7th Generation? It's maddening!

Hi guys, I don't know how on earth that got on there - I must have misremembered the name of the product I used...I'm so sorry! Thanks for being vigilant!

Also, plain hot water on a scrubby cloth works for loads of jobs. You might be surprised!

As Heather Eaton McGrane says, i have cloth instead of toilet paper. To use cloth for no 2's, i have old water bottles (the pop up top kind) to rinse your bum first with water. Also works a treat for rinsing during period time too. Feels much cleaner! :)

Clean with Method, use old washcloths instead of paper towels to clean the bathroom with, up to three plys/pieces of toilet paper rule, and I try not to flush unless needed but my husband freaks out and yells at me! LOL!

I have stainless steal appliances and instead of the cleaner and polisher that came with the appliances (dont know whats in it but my nose and eyes burn like fire) I clean them with vinegar and water then come back thru with some light corn oil on a washrag and they not only shine well but also resist my kids hand prints better and in the middle of the week and quick wipe down with a dry cloth shines them when company is coming over.

Good morning! I've got many uses for olive oil! My Italian grandma taught me about its many uses when I was a teenager. Besides cooking with it, there are several ways to use olive oil in a "green" way, and you may find these few tips interesting and useful! Grandma used it on her beautiful hair to make it shine, it's great for squeaky hinges, polishing stainless steel kitchen appliances, and it makes my wood furniture lustrous and beautiful instead of using commercial polishes. I recycle old flour sack dish towels, which can be washed after using...one for applying olive oil and one for buffing. Everything is beautiful afterwards and the house does not smell like a salad!
