Mom's Granola (and so with Mom's in mind...)
Today I made 'Mom's Granola' from 'The Kind Diet'. It is so super good and fabulous for anyone with kids. They will devour the goodness without even knowing... I didn't have all of the ingredients so I had to tweak mine a little-- for example I used agave instead of Maple syrup or brown rice syrup, coconut oil instead of safflower oil and chia seeds in place of wheat germ. It turned out really nice. I thought of other subs for next time like maybe some flax seeds? Or peanut butter? dunno...

I made this last night. I'm forcing myself to stay out of the kitchen so I don't eat all of it. I actually heated some up with rice milk for breakfast. Amazing!

I also made some modifications. Organic light brown sugar for maple sugar. Almond oil for safflower oil (nice nutty flavor).
I just made a batch and its pretty good! I substituted half organic light brown sugar and cane sugar for the maple sugar and I added cashews and more nuts to the mix. I also used craisins instead of raisins and threw in a bit more coconut (taste is somewhat lost in the mix). Delicious!!
I made this but made the mistake of using quick cooking oats instead of the steel cut oats...still good, but not as crunchy as the original recipe.
I made this the other day. It tastes delicious, but I was bummed about the consistency. It did not really turn out chunky like granola but rather cereal-like. It made for the best cereal, but I'm hoping for more of a granola consistency next time. Anybody else have this problem or have a suggestion?? Thanks.
Yes Briann, mine came out the same way! I wanted to make it again today as a matter of fact to see if it comes out the same, maybe with less granola on the cookie sheet when baking. Then I saw your post. I have made it twice and with the same problem. Anyone else?

When I make my granola I use craisins BUT I soak them over night with a cinnamon teabag, then I strain off the liquid and add it to my oatmeal and give it a good stir before baking. Im not sure that craisens are allowed but they cant be that bad can they? Anyway then store the plumped up craisens in the fridge and add a spoonful every morning when I eat my granola. You can also add the "craisen juice" and craisens to homemade muffins too. Adding millet to muffins is great too it gives them an interesting crunch!
Yes! Mine is a cereal like consistency as well, and I know it will be yummy but would have preffered a clumpy granola. Pout.

I have made this twice and it was more flaky then clumpy both times but everyone loves it.
Soooo yummy! It's amazing I am evan losing weight now that I went vegan with all the food I have been pilling in :)I just bought some Ricera Rice Yogurt (vanilla) at whole foods to eat with my granola. Has anyone else tried it? It's non dairy, non soy and vegan. I didn't think it was so great on it's own but was very good with the granola. Another plus is that it is made from brown rice!
I made this recipe yesterday and mine too was more cereal than granola.  Despite this, it was delicious.  My kids absolutely loved it.  We ate it simply with soy milk and fruit.  I think they ate 3 bowls each!  I have pics of the recipe at my Kind Diet blog.  http://mykinddietjourney.blogspot.com/2010/05/alicias-moms-granola.html
I also used cranberries instead of raisins.
I think you would have to increase the sugary ingredients to get it to clump together like traditional granola.  Since my kids are happy as is, I think I'll just leave it alone.
Good Luck everyone!

I just tried this today :)  Super yum!  I did let it cook a little longer on accident (because I forgot it in the oven WOOPS!) but I liked the mistake.  I made some substitutions simply because I didn't have all the ingredients, but it was still delish!

That is good to know it's like  cereal.  I'd actually like to make my own granola cereal so I can control what goes in it.

It clumps better if you add more rice syrup/sugar.
