NEW* Couch to 5K

Hi! I saw the old forum an couch to  5K, and I noticed it was started a few months ago. I actually just started this, and was wondering if anyone has done this before, and if it worked for them?

I literaly am not a runner at all! My sister is a long distance runner, and has been all her life, I was pretty envious of her, too....but she reccomended this to me, and sisnce there was an iphone app for it, I decided to attempt it. I'm only one day in, and my next session is tomorrow....but I'm pretty excited!

can you direct me to the info on this? it sounds great. my dad is a runner and i really would like to be but i'm a little unsure how to start. by the way i have a blackberry i wonder if they also have an app.

So I'm not too sure about the Blackberry....but iphone has 2  C25k apps....  I purchased the app that had a brown background and a white "5K" on the icon.

This is what the app actually does: it give you stretches to do pre and post exercise. There are 9 weeks of 3 exercises per week, (does that make sense?) and this is the example of week 1 session 1:

you selecet start! yay!! the voice on the program says: "begin warm up, start walking." 5 minutes later the program says: "Begin running." you run for 1 minute then the voice tells you: "Begin walking." the you walk for 1.5 minutes. This 1 minute/1.5 minute rotation  goes 8 times, then you hear the best workds in the whole world: "1 minute left!!" which is awesome! then there's a 5 minute cool down, and you have the option to redo the stetches.

I LOVE IT! I am a horrible runner and I did way better then I expected. I completed 6 full segments of running, and the 2 I didn't complete, i did attempt, but couldn't finish, and they were in the middle, I finished real strong at the end. also, you can use your ipod at the same time, and if you make yourself an awesome workout mix, it flys by.

Also, on the website www.c25k.com I there is a way you can access the program and print out the whole plan. I just found it easier to be told what to do during the workout so I didn't have to pay attention to a stop watch. also, as with any exercise program, you will only get out of it what you put in.

I can tell you this, my husband tried it, and he loved it! I hope in 9 weeks I can actually run a whole 30 minutes without stoping!

Hi Courtney,

I'm going to try it.  It's only 3 times a week.  I went on their site and it gives you a print out, but I'm a lot like you, I think it will be a lot easier for someone to tell me the time, etc.  How much did you pay for it and do you have to be ready to go as soon as you download the AP?  Thank you for your help!  smiley-undecided.gif

My Mother In Law did a couch to 5K clinic through the Running Room.  She was in her mid sixties when she started.  She had never run in her life and was in terrible shape.  She went on to qualify for and complete the full Boston marathon.  Its amazing what you can accomplish if you are determined.  Good for you for trying something new!

Michele-

trust me, this is worth th2 $2.99....promise. I really think I can accomplish this, and my sister is my biggest supporter,

Also, u don't need to start the program the minute u dowload it;.... I'm actually restarting the app/program tomorrow because of bronchitas...  smiley-cry.gif     but in 2 days...I'm ready to get back to it!!!!!!!

Okay, I'm in I'll just have to make sure I get the right AP.  Well I found the right AP on my iPOD touch but it won't let me buy, I'm not sure why but I will figure it out soon and keep you posted.  I'm in NY where are you from?

oops Hi Courtney,

I just tried to get the AP again and it won't give it to me, it says I need an iPHONE....smiley-yell.gif

Michele-

Maybe try a different app, I think the other one may be just as good. I started the program, went a whole 3 days and then got super sick! So, I am restarting tomorrow.......

There is the website; www.c25k.com and you can print off the actual program to follow, it may just be a little awkward checking a stop watch constantly.

Ont of my frineds who is a trainer at the gym I go to gave me some good advice, too. If you use a treadmill, you can get similar effects by following the minutes, but instead of running, increse the INCLINE for the duration of the running sequence. It really works! Keep the same pace, (as quickly as you feel comfortable, ex. you can still have a conversation) and increase the incline pretty dramatically. Repeat for the whole routine, and after 2 weeks you could probably do the running without the time infront of you becasue your body will feel when it's gotten enough running and needs a break.  Does that make anysense? LOL!

Good Luck! I'll keep you posted on my program.

Thanks for sharing this great discussion. Here is a video I made about how I ran in Venice and Bangkok in a 5 kilometer and 10 kilometer race on a 100% Low Fat Raw Vegan diet and how I achieved new personal best times in each race:
