I gained some weight when I started this journey too. I think I felt that since I was "giving up" so much...the meat, dairy and eggs,... that I was entitled to eat my fill of french fries, vegan cupcakes, veggie burgers, Daiya filled quesadillas (although I still have those in moderation), and boxes of crackers with hummus. My portions were really out of whack. I have recently started to take my vegan lifestyle, and marry it with my old Weight Watchers points program, and the pounds are coming off. For me, its all about keeping the processed foods to a minimum, not being so liberal with the oil and sugar, and measuring portions honestly. I hope this helps you. I do believe this is a great lifestyle, but for me, I need to be more careful about calories in and calories out.
