oprah's earth day advice

I saw the Cove and a speech from the makers of the film at the Philharmonic here in Naples. Everyone should watch this film, and do as much as they can to help. I'm so glad that these people are starting to really get some publicity. The cove is at blockbuster now everyone! Go rent it!

I did see this episode of Oprah and like the previous Earth Day shows it was very enlightening. I knew the basic story of The Cove but to see the brutality along with just how amazing dolphins are it broke my heart. All marine life is precious and special but these animals being self aware like we are is absolutely amazing!

The garbage swirls in our oceans are a travesty and I hope we as a people can begin to really stop the use of all these plastic materials or at the very least recycle everything that we do use. All we can ask is that people be aware and their very best in this effort!
Alicia, I'm very curious to know about your reaction to the recent oil spill that has hit the coastline of LA. I am so saddened that this has happened and all of the marine and wildlife in its path.
It amazes me that people don't realize what becomes of our trash, as if it magically disappears! I hope people can start to love and protect this planet for generations to come because we don't own it, right here, right now-We're just borrowing it!! We have responsibilities to our planet and our children!
I live 3 blocks from the beach in Bay St Louis, MS & the smell of oil in the air is getting worse as the day goes on. . . this area is approximately half an hour from where the oil is already making landfall, so we will be getting it soon :( My heart aches for the marine & wildlife affected by this spill and for the workers whose lives it claimed.
My last post was for Sunshinegirl's post. . .
I also watched Oprah's Earth Day show & was grateful for the topic of recycling. It helped open lines of communication with other family members to see the impact we all can make by simply doing our part each day. . . and by the end of the weekend, two non-veg family members shared lunch with us at a Veg/Vegan cafe & were amazed! Baby steps, but in the right direction!
I also watched this Earth Day episode. I haven't yet seen The Cove, though I'm sure it will break my heart. The thing about learning about the destruction of these beautiful creatures, and the unimaginable amount of waste filling our oceans makes you want to get up and take action. That's how I felt after watching Oprah on Earth Day.

I wrote a blog post about it, and made a list of how to improve my eco-footprint Some of my actions include:
-bring re-usable shopping bags when I'm going shopping
-carry my coffee tumbler and use it on the go
-start composting (finally!) and i recently found out that there are composting sties around my area where I can drop off my compost! so great!
-Power down computer every night instead of leaving it on
-Try to buy only earth-friendly cosmetics and cleaning products

Everyday should be Earth Day! <3

Hi Alicia, I signed the petition on Facebook about stopping the dolphin slaughter in Japan and posted the petition link on my Facebook homepage. Hope what little I can do can help. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I love dolphins and want to stop this senseless slaughter.

We still have that garbage trash pile swirl that is twice the size of the state of Texas 1,000 miles off the coast of California to deal with. It is a huge mountain of garbage comprised mostly of plastic bottles and plastic items that has been forming for the last 45 to 50 years from people dumping pastic bottles in sewers and rivers and it all winds up in the ocean.

The plastic is very slowly breaking down into plastercine which looks like food to the fish. The fish eat the plastercine and then we eat the toxic plastercine which is absorbed into the fishes bodies when we eat the fish.

This is a nightmare.

YES! It's so awesome when someone like Oprah, or you Alicia, spreads the word out about all these environmental issues, and provides ways in which everyone can help in their own way. It reaches such a large population and skeptics seem to take more notice when someone famous brings everyone else up to speed on current issues. I love when people use their fame for positive things!!
On a side note: I can't belive that guy from the family who were environmentally un-friendly would run the tap water in the kitchen because he liked the sound of it! Crazy! He should just get a cd/mp3 of waterfall/ocean sounds!

I watched this episode and was so moved. I immediately went to sign the petition for The Cove and shared on my facebook. I often don't feel like I make a difference as just one person signing these things so we need EVERYONE on here to sign this. Most of my friends don't care about this stuff but I know everyone on here does and it can make a big difference, and it's easy so do it!

I was also amazing at the garbage patches in the ocean. I didn't know these existed. Being a forward thinking person I am imagining what our oceans will look like for the next generation. This is devastating the natural habitat for an unimaginable amount of species, and I can imagine that if we continue living the way we are we will suffer serious consequences due to these garbage patches. We have to share this with as many people as we know!

I actually didn't watch this episode, but I'm kind of inspired to clean up the ocean now!

I signed!
I am trying my best to be as conscious of what I use and how I dispose of things and recycle, etc.....I'm not perfect of course but I will do more and more research on becoming the best I can possibly be- When I go to the gym- I wonder if people know where their plastic water bottles end up, do they care?, I will ask them and ask them to please think about it from now on.....from family, friends, and those around me- every bottle- is one step closer to a big or smaller problem in the end!!

Check out my blog as I document my year to get to Oprah! www.dominique-blindambitions.blogspot.com!

to Renee's comment, I was thinking the same thing! Why did that guy need to hear water running??  I really liked the very basic "wife swap" part, that will probably reach your average family's way of thinking.
