This may be a question asked frequently or a completly random question but what if I want to own a chicken? I'm vegan and love chickens, not to eat of course but I think they are funny creatures. I don't eat eggs and I can't stop them from laying them so how would a vegan own one? I feel like it would be defeating the whole purpose of going vegan if I sold the eggs or gave them to someone else to eat because I would be contributing to others eating animal products. I'm not against others choices in eating meat or animal products but I would feel wierd being apart of it. Any thoughts?

Chickens will usually eat thier own eggs. They really need the calcium. Chickens need other chickens, so having just one would be depressing. So if you are going to rescue a chicken make sure you can rescue a few.

If a chicken hasn't eaten the egg, break it up for them. I have heard if there is no rooster around, chickens will slow thier production after time. If you end up with way too many they are great in compost.

I am vegan but I am unable to convince my husband or children to be vagan. Therefor unfortunatly I am forced to sometimes use animal products. I try to buy alternatives to animal products or the free range but I still admit that is usually not always good either. I do not like consuming animal products period but my other family members refuse to stop so I am in a difficult position. I have always wanted chickens as a pet and we will move to a house in a few years. Is it really that bad to use the eggs they lay for my family members when the chickens are living a wonderful life with a lot of room and freedom. I want the chickens regardless if they lay eggs or not so I would not be rid or them or kill them if they ever stop laying and no chickens would suffer or have to die for the eggs. Believe me I am discusted by how even the cage free and free range farms raise their chicken but mine would be about half a dozen chickens roaming the land living a proper chicken life. Is this acceptable to than use their eggs or is it still frowned upon?

I would think it would be okay to give the eggs away.  It would cut back on ones that those individuals buy from the grocery store that come from farms that mistreat the chickens.
