Radiation and seaweed...

I'm surprised there isn't more talk of this on the boards though if there is I missed it. ; )

I read yesterday that they've been finding radiation in the water in WA state,OR,CA and as far away as Boston.  Since I live in WA state I took note. I know that a lot of people are taking iodine pills but I also wanted to remind people about seaweed. Alicia talks about this on page 72 of TKD.  I was reading last night about seaweed and radiation and found out about Dr. Shinichiro Akizuki who kept patients safe from radiation poisoning, due to the bomb in '45, thru a strict diet of brown rice, miso, tamari soy sauce, wakame and other sea veggies, Hokkiado pumpkin aka kabocha squash and sea salt. Also absolutely no sugar or sweets. You can look all this info up about him online. Not that you'd eat that diet daily but I think the working in of seaweed and miso soup daily would help people.

Anyway I thought I'd pass this info along and or/remind people about seaweed and radiation.

Yeah seaweed is great for protecting against radiation, brown seaweed in particular.

There is a specific product known as brown seaweed extract powder(modifilan) which removes and protects against radioactive elements.

Iodine can only go so far, where as the compounds in seaweed protect the whole body.

Another thing to remember...  as far as we know, the levels of radiation that are reaching this country are far lower than the radiation already present.  The U.S. has tested nearly 2000 nuclear weapons on or near the U.S. since the technology was developed.  I'm much more concerned and pissed about that.  And lots of things expose us to radiation, in small doses, on a daily basis.  A banana has trace amounts of radiation!  So I think incorporating sea veggies into one's diet is a good thing ALL the time, not just when there is an event like the current one.  But maybe this will encourage more people to take another look at seaweed.

Yeah very good points Sara, like you say the body is exposed to low levels of radiation daily.

It is alginate, extracted from brown seaweeds, which can reduce the absorption of radioactive strontium released after nuclear accidents.

Isn't seaweed come from the sea which now has radiation? I am confused anyone want to shed some light on this for me..... sorry if this is a dumb question?

I think that's a good question Holly. I imagine the radiation would be concentrated in Japan's immediate vicinity and could contaminate anything harvested from those waters. I'm not sure what would be most likely to become contaminated though or at what levels.

I agree with powerlifer about the modifilan!  I asked the company about future effects of radiation on the seaweed and they said they harvest 1400 miles away from Japan and don't forsee any problems.  Be sure to order veggie caps if you are vegan, you have to specifically ask for them.

Modifilan has helped me in many ways, including my thyroid.

Holly and Christal - They are health authorities in each country who can say what to do with Japanese plant food and the food from your own country. In Europe, they say, no worries are needed.

Bor, I would love to believe the authorities however I feel they tell us bad news after the fact sometimes to avoid big scares! frantic people.  :)
