I would love to visit Animal Place next time I'm in the area. I really enjoyed learning about all the ways I can help!

Places like this give me hope in knowing that others share my love for each and every animal! This is awesome. :)
how cool to be able to foster an animal! music in the meadows sounds really cool
There seem to be an awful lot of things unanswered right now, so I'll be blunt about what I believe, I'm just trying to help... For one thing I would give a lot to have been there in 1998 when you did attend a meeting about animal rights, you say you realized you were "part of the problem"... Even if you were already open about the idea what they said wouldn't have changed you so easily, I believe that in your emotionally fragile state of mind of the time after the movie "Clueless" you needed to give a meaning to your life but took a decision without thinking... I've read your article "My toughts on fur", you say among other things "I’ve said things that, even though they were truly what I felt, only angered or alienated people"... Personally my strategy is to be certain that I can defend the idea I'm trying to sell, like "Michael Moore" do, then who care if the person is angry, I know my point of view is defendable, the person should at least listen, if she don't want then it's useless wasting time trying to sell her anything, she won't listen anyway... Your book is interesting for the good recipes who are in it, but where are the pictures of the slaughterhouses, facts about McDonald's and other big companies who apparently don't care about treating animals in a humane way... PETA is already doing an excellent work, it's useless to do it twice... A big part of the problem seem to be that some peoples apparently accused you of being selfish among other things, personally I believe they have something against womans who know what they want and how to obtain it, personally I love that, anyway it's obvisouly that you have a strong personnality we can't do anything about that... I believe they saw the movie "The Crush", you're such a good actress, I can understand that some peoples really believe you could do something like that... Also I don't really understand what you mean by "Factory Farming", but personally I totally respect the choices peoples make regarding that, I try not to be the kind of person who would tell peoples how to live...
My favoite sanctuary is Peaceful Prairie in Colorado. Located near abandoned missile
silos on the plains east of Denver. Strong advocates for the animals.

Animal Place is a WONDERFUL organization. Not only are they there for the animals but they are there to educate the public about them, in all kinds of ways. I haven't been able to get to GV yet but I've been to their location in Vacaville many times. LOVE IT! You feel so at home and alive around these wonderful creatures that have been given a second chance at life. AP, keep up the GREAT work!
I spent this past weekend at Animal Place where once you step onto the land you enter a vegan world where the needs and comforts of the animals is primary. I encourage you all to visit Animal Place and to embrace a vegan lifestyle that is truly the best way to stop contributing to animal suffering.
Thank you for posting about Animal Place, Alicia. I hope you come for a visit some time (they're our neighbors!); Animal Place is a magical sanctuary for the resident animals and the humans who visit. Our 5 year-old vegan daughter loves communing with the magnificent creatures who grace this 600 acres of bucolic land that inspires peace and soul gratitude. The people who run the sanctuary are fabulous as well!

There is nothing more affirming for being vegan than going to a sanctuary and meeting the animals in person.
Alicia, thank you for sharing this post about Animal Place with us. I'll definitely put it on my list of places to visit in 2012, along with Farm Sanctuary in Orland, CA. I live not "too far" away, so I think I should be able to get there at least once this year. Along the way, I'll stop in Nevada City (right next to Grass Valley) and eat at Ike's Quarter Cafe. I haven't gotten to go there yet, but I've heard that they have a ton of vegan dishes and that they are AWESOME! So, it'll be a nice day trip for me to go see the animals at Animal Place and get to hang out and play with them and then go eat some yummy vegan food in NV City. What a great day, that I'll look forward too.
My favorite sanctuary is Sunny Day Farms Animal Sanctuary in LaCoste, Tx. The founder, Brooke Chavez, is battling everyday to bring compassion to the meatiest state in America. It's truly my favorite place in the world. My first visit was 2 weeks after going vegan. Holding a purring chicken in my arms made me so emotional, I knew I absolutely made the right choice (and kindest!). They could use every vegan and animal lovers support to continue their rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Please check out their facebook page :)
My boyfriend's parents have a house in GV. Next time we go up there I am absolutely visiting! I also want to go to Farm Sanctuary in Orland. Thanks for the heads up, Alicia!
weird. i am from grass valley and i have never heard of this....
Alicia (and anyone else) - I have a question.
Yesterday I picked my baby pup Patton from the kennel after a weekend of fun yesterday, and the owner proceeded to question me about Patton's food. He said he was concerned that Patton doesn't eat meat, and it could eventually lead to health problems and even death. I told him I appreciate his concern, and it's true. That must have been difficult to say. However, I feel it was a bit presumptuous and shows how discriminative people can be about our "alternative" yet much healthier lifestyle.
He begged me to resume research, and I told him I would, as I pride myself in being more open minded than most (coughhimcough). Do you have any resources I may utilize? Any advice on things to tell him?
Thank you so much for profiling Animal Place!
In addition to self-guided tours available now (we're open Thursdays-Saturdays 10:00-3:00 pm), we also have volunteer opportunities! Our next orientation is February 4th - http://animalplace.org/volunteer.html
