I just love the idea of guerilla gardening.

This spring, I'm hoping to grow wildflowers in my front yard, which is now pretty much just dirt. My mom and I did it at our old house and it was great. It's a rental, but I think my land;ord would be okay with it.  I'm just hoping the city doesn't interfere. Last summer, they kept giving people in my neighborhood notices about weeds (and trust me, the weeds were not bad, unless you're one of those people who loves nature to be manicured). When wildflowers first start to grow, they of course look like green weeds. Maybe if I get a notice I can call the city and tell them they're flowers, I've seen a couple houses in the neighborhood with these great, wild front yards with humongous wildflowers and other plants.

I remember reading somewhere that a Women who was just fed up of the city and decided to try & change it herself each day.  Each day she should throw seeds out of her car window on the way to work or when around the place she lived.

Found this an interesting idea because she was at least making a step towards something.. Not sure how many of the seeds survived into flowers but an interesting way to change "her" world a bit.

These Seed bombs seem a very cool idea, I planted a lot of seeds recently that were attached to a "innocent smoothie" bottle because they were campaigning to make more flowers that are bee friendly.  Not sure if sticking tons of seed packets to bottles for people to plant was much of a success but these seed bombs seem ideal.

It only takes someone to look around at something in their life a use a little effort each day I guess.

I'm adding one new Vegan Recipe a week & taking a lot of things as routinal steps right now.

Oh, have you all seen green rooftops? Those are the most awesome thing ever. In some of the larger cities, some people are starting rooftop yards. Planting grass and everything. Not only does it make more use of space (double that liveable space of your house!), but it can help reduce city temps that rise because of all the asphalt and concrete.

The magazine Organic Connections also ran an article on these guys. Wonderful idea they developed. http://organicconnectmag.com/wp/2010/11/greenaids-guerrilla-gumball-machine-gardening/

yes, these are awesome!

we have one outside our shop, The Green Life, in Santa Monica + they get a ton of attention from passerbys. we've found that kids are super receptive to them + interested in buying them, which is so cool.

here are smoe pictures of our machine: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=169987&id=47998399233

How inspiring!

That is such a sweet idea I hope more and more get put out there I've seen quite a few lots when driving that could use some of these seed bombs.

Love this post. Thanks for the post Alicia!

That is the COOLEST thing I have seen in a LONG time! Since Mississippi is quite frankly the ugliest state ever, and no machines are here- I can't wait to make these with my daughter and distribute them around. Thanks for telling us about this!

This is so cool!  Too bad you can't toss 'em into the snow...otherwise I'd want them where I'm at!

Very Cool- I'm definitely getting one this weekend!

Wow! Brilliant.....So brill that it inspires further technological inginuity! Perhaps enlisting the help of dung beetles. Instead of clay shells to house the compost and seeds, and all that work of placing gumball machines across the country they could just stuff the seeds in dung balls and then place a dung beetle upon the pre-composted manure lump and let him/her roll away--across the countryside!

Would this violate the civil rights of dung beetles?

That is a wonderful idea. I think alot of people would buy the bombs just to see if they would grow;as a novelty. And people that didn't even think of planting something might just do it on a whim. It's a great way to get kids into helping out, they our little sponges of creativity. Maybe classes could do it as a project. This could turn into a new movement. I like the dung beetle idea too.

The kiddies would probably embrace this idea hook line and sinker--Holley. I think gum ball machines would appeal to their little likings as well. Great direction of contemplation. They probably would like dung beetles too. I mean, the little ones are rather curious about poo are they not?:)

How absolutely awesome! When the snow melts, I'm going to find some. My grandkids will ADORE them. Thanks for sharing this with us!
