Should I avoid bread?

So, I think I may like bread a little too much . . . I make homemade whole wheat bread at home, but once it's around, I can't seem to limit myself to just 1 or 2 pieces a day. I find myself craving it all the time, even though I love whole grains, too. Does anyone else find it difficult to resisit bread? I don't really want to cut it from my diet since it's so easy and cheap to make (I have a bread machine), and it's convenient, too, for meals and snacks, but I'm looking for others' opinions. How should I resolve this problem?

Thanks!

Teniesha, we have a similar problem! White bread is a "gateway" food to binging for me. So I avoid it like the plague! Really hearty bread is still something I can overdo as well.

To stop the mindless eating, try freezing the bread. Slice it up first, then freeze. When you're hungry, take a couple pieces and toast. It doesn't affect the taste of the bread at all! The time it takes to take the bread out of the freezer and toast it can be just the amount of pause you need to re-think if you really want that second slice/sandwich. And if the bread is in the middle of toasting and I've changed my mind about it, I just pop it out. Wait til it's cooled down and put it back in the freezer. That re-freezed slice is not as good --but will still be edible.

Hope that helps!

The issue I have with flour and bread products is that it literally clogs me up! Flour is the substance which makes everything stick together! For me,hell is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! smiley-undecided.gif

Hi Teniesha,

It sounds like you have the same sugar addiction as me!  It really is just that, an addiction.  I mean, when I want it, I crave it, get pissed off until I consume it, and then feel guilty after my third piece. I never feel this away about any whole food. Bread may as well be hard drugs. This being said, I feel that anything that cannot be taken in moderation, should be avoided. If you can't yet have a healthy relationship with bread, it may be best to ween yourself off of it. Then incorporate really high quality, hearty, seed soaked, whole grain slices as a treat. I love Mary's idea about freezing it, I am doing that from now on!

Peace.
