Soy and cancer
I recently got a mamogram back and have to undergo more tests to see if its cancerous. I drink soymilk and consume soy products. I've heard its not good to consume soy if u may have breast cancer. Does anyone know anything about this? I'm lost and scared to death. What to do???
I am sorry to hear that.  Positve thoughts for you....  I have emailed a friend of mine who has battled breast cancer to see if her doctor has indicated any negative effects from soy.   I will let you know if she has any information.
Amy, I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this.  Believe me I understand the fear and anxiety.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer on 11/26/08 at 37 years old.   The waiting period is the toughest, just remember there is nothing you can do until you hear the results (easier said than done I know).  If you need anything, feel free to contact me anytime.

As for the soy issue.  Even after my diagnosis, I eat soy products such as tofu, edamame but I try to limit if not elimiate soy isolate products and processed foods containing soy.  Like anything that has been processed and stripped of its orginal form it lacks true benefits and can cause issues.  Here is a great article about the Soy Controversy that explains the confusion and the benefits of soy.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/neal-barnard-md/settling-the-soy-controve_b_453966.html

Kim

Hey!! I saw your post and then was reading my magazine VegNews and thought of you! There was a small artical from Dr. Barnard about health and soy so I am just going to quote it for you and hope it helps! "Numerous scientific studies, examined the various claims of both pro-and anit soy consumption. Of particular concern are the effects of soy on cancer risks for men (prostate) woman (breast). Barnard reveals that soy is healthy for both sexes, and that it may also reduce risk of fibroids and osteoporosis related bone fractures. He notes that while soy products can certainly be incorporated into a healthy, plant based diet, thay are not necessary for vegetarians."
Hope this makes you feel better and youI will keep you in my thoughts!!

Amy, I understand what you're going through.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago and remember all too well the anxiety throughout the process.  Hang in there and know that there is a lot of good diet information out there as well as very qualified people to help you.  Kim is right about not being able to do anything until you hear your diagnosis but just know that either way, you will be okay and you will get through this.  Try to keep a positive attitude and lean on people who've been there and can be positive with you.  Please feel free to contact me any time.  I'm happy to listen and offer insight.  You're already ahead of most people because you're on a GREAT, supportive website.  Shine through!!

Thank you all for your support and encouraging words its really scary but its also been an eye opener for me as well. I'm switching everything to organic. No more buying body products, shampoo, deodorant anything thats not organic. My health and life are too important.
