sprouting your own..

I'm considering buying one of the geo-sprouters and wonder if any fellow lifers have any advice? What seeds are best?

Hi Kate: I just got one of those mason jar sprouting kits from my local natural grocery store. it was about 10$...It included a mason jar and 3 different colored lids and each lid has different sized holes. The directions were included and very easy! you can pretty much sprout any grain or seed....i believe you can order seeds/grains to sprout online and natural grocery stores like Whole Foods, Earth Fare, Trader Joe's, etc normally have good selections in their bulk or natural healing departments. Alfalfa Sprouts are always good to start experimenting with!

Thanks Leanmachine, I saw those jars and they're not expensive here in the UK. I'll give them a shot!

Hi Katie, I bought a simple sprouting jar and seeds from Living Foods St Ives UK https://www.livingfood.co.uk/. A starter pack containing a sprouting jar and 3 packs of seeds of your choice is £9.95. I use the sprouting jar every couple of days mostly for mung beens and alfalfa sprouts. I use Living Foods of St Ives because their seeds are organic and I have always had 100% germination success with their seeds. However I have not managed to get quinoa to sprout at all. Even following the buddy system where you mix them with another bean/seed. Best of luck with your sprouting.

Alison, that's great thanks so much. I hadn't even thought about Quinoa! Brilliant. thanks again.

I am by no means a sprouting guru but I have sprouted with a few different seeds in the mason jars like was mentioned above and I have had a lot fo success with a lot of different seeds.

Sorry the link didn't work. That was the site that I bought by sprouters from.

A few months back in the Misc (I think) forum, I posted a link for Garden's Alive, where you can get $25 off $25 of their products, including a sprouter with organic seeds. That's what I did.

I purchased a sprouting jar....my favorite (and the easiest IMHO) are mung bean sprouts. Soak 1/4 cup and 4 cups water for 8 hours; then rinse several times and drain. Rinse 2 times a day for about three days; then drain and keep chilled (in a paper towel to absorbe extra moisture). Keeps in the fridge for about 5 days. Yummy!

I've tried sprouting without a jar..the quinoa tasted nasty after the first day and the garbanzos haven't sprouted in 5 days.LOL what is going ON?! I live in the tropics,it should be a breeze!

I do my own sprouting at home and I bought the seeds from Mumm's Sprouting Seeds:

http://www.sprouting.com/

They ship to Canada and the USA and if you buy over a certain amount, shipping is free...all of the seeds are certified Organic. The company also has a statement I noticed on their website that they have a lawsuit against Monsanto with 60 other farmers/farming organizations so they are fighting the good fight! :)

Sprouts are so easy to grow, within days you have fresh sprouts, delicious and nutritious! :)

I inherited a sprouting tray and it's so easy! you pretty much just carefully rinse the seeds every 12 hours and grow them as high as you like.I live in the tropics and my sprouts are so high! however they are hard for me digest,so I haven't been using them.smiley-frown.gif

Broccoli sprouts ARE THE BEST! And sOOOOOO EASY!!!!!

hehehe

I am VERY into them at the moment
