Throat Issues

Does anyone have any tips or remedies for sore throats? I have had a sore throat for the past few days and am wondering if anyone has any kind remedies for it? I usually gargle with salt water but that isn't doing the trick. I get sore throats pretty often - at least a few times a year and I have contracted strep the past 2 years in a row.

Thanks in advance.

hot water, lemon and honey = cure all. i swear by this whenever i feel like i am about to get sick. i also prevent getting sick by taking ecenacia at the first signs of a sore throught.

hope you feel better :)

Hi Meghan,

If you're also avoiding honey, I would try hot water, lemon, and ginger, plain. If you need a sweetner, try stevia. Avoid other sweet products as they tend to make the problem worse (ie feed the infection).

Another herbal tea that I recommend is Thoat Coat tea by Traditional Medicinals.

I hope that helps and you get well soon!

Sorry, typo. That was "Throat Coat" tea. Also, you have to drink it several times a day for it to be most effective. That goes for my lemon/ginger tea trick as well.

I don't consume honey so I will try the ginger tea. I'll also pick up some "Throat Coat"... I think I have seen it at Whole Foods.

Quick questions about the ginger - should I juice it? grate it?

Thank you for the suggestions! I'll update and let you know if they work.

Throat Coat tea is fantastic - I swear by it.  However, if you do have strep you will need to see a doctor, otherwise it can travel to your heart which isn't good.

Thanks for the info Smurfy. I am going to see a doctor, but use the teas as a supplement to whatever they give me.

@Meghan

I usually just slice a thin piece and throw it right in the cup. letting it steep for a few minutes before I drink it. And no, I don't eat the ginger..although I'm sure you could...

But really I prefer the Throat Coat...some people don't like the taste, but I really like it. I do the ginger/lemon when I've run out of Throat Coat and haven't had the chance (or am too darn lazy) to run to the store.

Thanks, @Mary L. I am going to get some fresh ginger tonight and try this. I have some in the fridge but it is a bit dried up!

I went to the doctor and it is just a bacterial infection. He started me on an antibiotic, which I don't love but hopefully it will make me better.

Thanks for all the comments and advice I really appreciate it!
