Vegan and celiac?

I am celiac (cannot have gluten). Can I successfully eat a vegan diet without gluten? It seems so many of the meat substitutes anyway have gluten in them. I need reassurance that someone else has been there.

There are many people that are both vegan and gluten-free...it can be done!  Meat substitutes are not necessary at all...they are mainly processed junk anyway.

I just checked this cookbook out at our library.  It's called the Gluten-Free Vegan, and I've started doing some research, as we are thinking that my fiance may have a gluten intolerance.  So far, the stuff looks super yummy and pretty simple too!

Cool - thanks for the info!!

Hey Kim!  I am currently battling Candida so I can't have gluten either (or yeast or sugar).  I've been successfully vegan and gluten-free for over 4 months now.  It can definitely be done.  What I normally do is check out books from the library and then page through them to find recipes that meet my dietary restrictions (and look yummy) and then print them off and keep them in a binder.  As Danielle hit upon - gluten is not really good for you anyway.  I would recommend checking out raw foods, too - they use veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds and you'd be amazed at the delicious foods they come up with.  I have some gluten-free recipes on my blog, too if you want to take a peek -

Thanks very much, Melissa. I will check out your blog. I am fairly good at adapting recipes as my needs dictate, and I already have a binder full of GF recipes. I guess I just need to modify them

this is me too.  And I agree that fake meat is processed and not healthy in my opinion.  I"m doing good so far 3 weeks in.  The bloat and belly pains are gone and so are the cravings!!  I've decided to stay away form Mary crackers for a while too bc that is to fimlar to wheat products and can be addictive.  Agave is a tad addicting so Im cutting that out after today! :)  Occassional treats.

Hey my fellow glutenfreevegans. :) I've been veg for quite sometime and then about a year and a half ago finally realized a gluten allergy was what had been making me sick for 19 years (since I was 6 years old).. It can be beyond frustrating and a challenge trying to maintain both diets at times, but I definitely feel much healthier! What are some staples in your diets? I can't stand any GF bread except Udi's but it's made with eggs, ugh..

I am a Celiac as well as a vegan and i found these amazing vegan/gluten free/sugar free english muffins made by organic oven http://www.organicoven.com/. It is the best i have been able to find so far =D

Anyone have any tips for gluten free baking? I need to make some cookies so I don't have to sit alone drinking water while everyone feasts (like I had to last Christmas)!

Hello, I am so glad I found this forum! I have just diagnosed myself with having celiac or gluten allergy and started blogging about it.  I was vegan for a year and that is what lead me to this conclusion.  I am eating a pescatarian diet right now but really would love to go back to eating vegan or at least vegetarian.  I am having a hard time finding the balance, I am only one week out , so it is still fresh.  But I would love to hear how other people are balancing vegan and gluten free. I found that my fiber in take is killing me in trying to do both.  So yeah balance.  I crave it right now :-)  If you are interested my blog is http://glutenfreepalette.blogspot.com

It is my hope to get others aware of what is triggering some of the symptoms in their bodies and change it through what they are eating, instead of going to meds. I have had a lot of response already mostly private messages from family, friends and co workers that have a lot of the same symptoms.
