On one hand, people might argue that he's a criminal who is in jail for committing an absolutely terrible crime, so why should his requests, which may be an inconvenience to the prison, be granted?
But I think the veganism as a religion idea is really interesting - I actually just read an article for a psychology study I'm doing that argued that animal rights is like a religion. Also, I can't help but support anyone who wishes to live a kinder life :)

I'm not religious (at all) but I am very spiritual, and veganism is very spiritual for me.  I can see how someone could compare it to a religion because of the spirituality involved.
