adopt a turkey!

A little while ago I was checking out the forums, and found something so great!  And now that it’s almost Thanksgiving, I wanted to let everyone know about it!

The Kind Life community member Dani wrote, “For this thanksgiving I am adopting a turkey from the Farm Sanctuary. You should check it out at www.adoptaturkey.org or www.farmsanctuary.org.  You can pick one out and they even send you a picture with the turkey's info.  It is so cute.  Please check it out.”  I have seen other community members writing about this recently, and I wanted to make sure everyone knows about it.  This is such a great thing that you can do to make your Thanksgiving as kind and loving as possible and fun too!

I really love this! Farm Sanctuary is so amazing! And I love this program that they do to save turkeys!!  Animal Acres also does something similar.  Another great place is Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, if you live in that area. I highly recommend that people go to one of these sanctuaries and have a fun time playing with the animals! You can go online and find an animal sanctuary in your area.  Have fun, play with the turkeys, goats and pigs...you’ll love it!  And kids love it too.

When I was working on Miss Match, I gave each cast member a sponsored animal for the holidays.  They got a little packet with their animal’s name, photo, and info.  You can do this through your favorite local animal rescue shelter usually, or through Animal Acres and Farm Sanctuary.

I also wanted to share with you this article from the New York Times that my friend Mike White sent me: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/22/opinion/22steiner.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=12

It’s called “Animal, Vegetable, Miserable”, and it’s a good read, especially right before Thanksgiving.  I’m a huge fan of Mike White’s and I’m so happy the New York Times printed such a well written article.... so wanted to share!

Bless your good heart, lady - thank you so much!! Sending you huge love right back -  You's my peep!! :)
Happy Tofurkey Day everyone!!!
I love Farm Sanctuary, I actually have visited their farm in NY and loved it. ;o) I will be having Thanksgiving at my favorite vegan restaurant here in South Florida. ;o)
I read the article and it was great. I am shocked to learn that band-aids, and some alcoholic drinks are not vegan. HOW SAD! How do I find out when beer or wine is vegan?
Have a lovely Thanksgiving.
Eliana,
Go to barnivore.com and you will find lists of vegan wine, beer and liquor.  I've gotten some good news and bad news there.  :-)
I'd like to respond to Matt's comments.  I went vegan in Oct. before I even finished reading Alicia's incredible book!  I can't really explain the transformation that her book created for me.  At any rate, I am very motivated and the process has been so much easier than I expected.  HOWEVER, I am SHOCKED at the responses I've gotten from friends and family!  I expected encouragement and admiration.  I think only 1 person gave me that!  My mom basically commented that my efforts were fruitless because I'm still buying & cooking meat and dairy for my family. I'm trying to come up with a succinct, thought-provoking response for when people ask, "Why?" but I've mostly resolved to just show them the beautiful results as my body and spirit make its peaceful & healthful transformation.  Best wishes, everyone!
Alicia, you're so terrific and I just admire everything you do on behalf of animals and the environment.  You magnify all of our voices!  Perhaps the most important contribution you're making is to mainstream veganism (and even make it cool!).  That is just so, so critical in order to inspire omnivores to consider vegetarianism and help vegetarians become vegan.
Have a wonderful and loving Thanksgiving and thank you again for bringing us the book and this site.  I love it!!

OMG, I loved Gary Steiner's article in the NYTimes! Beautifully written! That's one to print out & give to those who have issues with why someone does not want to do the "sit around the turkey" ritual...perhaps even inspire them to consider an alternative in the future. Thanks for the link, Alicia! I totally get inspiration every day from this site!
Thanks Island!  Your response means a lot to me.

That's been the hardest thing for me so far.  Telling people about my change to a vegan diet.  I know exactly why I've done it, and have no doubts about it.  But it's hard to explain to other people and not sound nuts.

Part of that reason is because I'm a really tall guy with some "meat" on the bones (Used to be 260,now 230!, haha).  The vegan diet, and exercise, is helping me put away the excess pounds.  Hopefully I keep the diet and can then be an example for people that you can still be strong and vegan at the same time!
