Catskill Animal Sanctuary
founder Kathy Stevens has written a book called Animal Camp, about her daily life at the sanctuary. Included in her book are stories of just-in-the-nick-of-time rescues, incredible recoveries from animal cruelty cases, and heart-melting instances of animals showing love, compassion, and friendship.

This book is for any animal lover, or anyone curious about how animal sanctuaries operate. It’s for flirts and animal-loving / non-veg friends too.

You can buy a copy of Animal Camp here – and if you live in New York, I highly recommend visiting Catskill Animal Sanctuary. You can read my blog about it here - it’s a very, very special place.

Do you have a great animal sanctuary near you?

I volunteer at SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary in Manchester, MI (the largest of its kind in the Midwest).  I'm always amazed by the different personalities of all the animals.  I've learned the "quirks" of certain critters, and there are so many parallels to being surrounded by a diverse group of people.  I pick up and disperse compost from Whole Foods (that would otherwise go to the trash), and it's a learning process who likes what (cows really like broccoli, and goats like leeks, and pigs will go crazy for pineapple...ok, pigs go crazy for just about anything)!

I actually noticed this book has recently been donated for the upcoming SASHA benefit banquet/silent auction, so maybe I'll have to bid on it and see what all the hype is about!  :)

Catskill is an amazing place! Thank you for featuring them, they do wonderful work and support so many sweet animals.

Hello Alicia,

I want to tell you that I loooove your book!!! It changed my life. I am eating so much better now even though I was already a vegan before I read your book. I learned so much from you. Thank you very much for writing this book and giving us so much information and awareness about so many things. I've already made a lot of recipes from your book and I love them all.

I really admire everything that you do. I always talk to my friends about your book. I am from Brazil and I have friends that do not speak english, so I want to ask you if you have your book in other languages. I would love to give it to them as a gift:)

Sorry I flagged the message by mistake.

I did't know what it meant. I couldn't unflagged it.

For a list of sanctuaries vetted by a rigorous application process and a site visit, check out http://www.sanctuaryfederation.org/gfas/gfas-sanctuaries/. We have about 30 more to go up soon....and many more to come this year. Not every sanctuary has chosen to apply yet, so it is not necessarily a "black mark" if a sanctuary is not on the list, but after more time has passed, you should certainly expect good sanctuaries to be on the GFAS (Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries) list! To learn about our board and staff visit http://www.sanctuaryfederation.org/gfas/about-gfas/.

Please urge your favorite sanctuaries, worldwide, to apply. There is no cost for applying!

We have a wonderful place for rescued farm animals in the state of Maryland. It is called Poplar Springs Farm Sanctuary. Check out their web page. They do alot to also educate the public about farm animals. People are always welcome to visit and volunteer at the farm.

Amazing how animal sanctuaries are flourishing here in the US. This weekend, I had the great opportunity to visit Animal Acres (www.animalacres.org) and it was such an experience. I blogged about it in odeisa.hubpages.com

Hope you can come and visit!
