I wanted to let you all know that Earth Hour Day is coming up on March 27th. What this entails is you turning off your lights for one hour on the 27th, starting at 8:30pm. By doing this, you are participating in a huge movement that includes hundreds of millions of people.
It's important to realize that our every day actions contribute to climate change. Let's work together and make a positive impact on our future. Join me in turning out your lights for just one hour, and let's get people talking about how we can make a change!
Boulder will join cities around the world Saturday night in turning off non-essential lights for one hour in celebration of Earth Hour 2010.
The global climate event, led by the World Wildlife Fund, has more than 4,100 cities around the world committed to go dark for one hour beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The event is part of a symbolic global call to action on climate change.
In Boulder, non-essential lights in all city-owned buildings and facilities will be turned off during Earth Hour. Public schools, commercial and residential buildings and local businesses will be encouraged to do the same.
According to the city, if all Boulder households and businesses went dark for one hour, carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced by 18 metric tons. That's equivalent to one Boulder household's entire carbon footprint for a year.
The city is also asking residents to replace at least three old light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights or pledge to take one action this year to reduce their carbon footprint.
