I first had this at a party about 10 years ago. That recipe was my inspiration for this healthier version.

We like to make this for football games. My husband Christopher is a huge Cleveland Browns fan. They never really win, but he always roots for them. He dresses our pit-bull in a Brown's shirt during the games! Super cute.

Reminder: this recipe doesn't belong in the superhero family, but it's loads better than what you usually find in party dips. When I was on The View recently, the ladies loved it. Bottom line - this dip is clean, dirty fun....

SERVES 8

INGREDIENTS
1 (16-ounce) can refried beans

3 large avocados

3 tablespoons fresh lime juice

2 (8-ounce) containers nondairy sour cream
1 packet taco seasoning (I use Bearitos, but if you are avoiding all white sugar, make your own mix with chili powder, ground cumin, onion powder, hot paprika or cayenne, and salt)

1/2 cup diced mild green chiles, drained

1/2 cup sliced black olives, or more if you like
5 tomatoes, chopped

2 cups shredded vegan Cheddar cheese

STEPS
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Spread a layer of refried beans in the bottom of an 8 inch by 8 inch quart glass baking dish.

Pit and peel the avocados, and place in a bowl.

Mash the avocados together with the lime juice, and spread on top of the refried beans.
Stir together the sour cream and taco seasoning, and spread over the avocado.

Sprinkle the chiles over the sour cream, and top with a layer of black olives.

Add the tomatoes, and sprinkle with the cheese.

Heat the dip for 15-30 minutes or until heated through and the cheese is a bit melted.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

no wonder i haven't lost any weight going vegan. soooo stinking good, next time i make it i am going to cover it with foil while it cooks because the cheese totally didn't melt and it did totally look like carrots... :/still really tasty.
I made this for Superbowl and I have been eating on it for 3 days! Just finished it. It was sooooooooo good! Thank you for a fabulous recipe! :-)
I made this for a Valentine's Day party I went to last night -- and it was gone within the first hour! I can't believe it! It was a huge hit; everyone loved it. They were literally RAVING about it.

I left out the cheese and didn't heat it up. Yum!
I made this last night. I ended up with two bowls worth so I left one at home for my flatmates and took the other off to the meeting I had to go to. It was a HUGE hit. The chair of the meeting ended up finishing it off with a spoon, and by the time I got home the second bowl was completely demolished too. I did find that the cheese solidified like someone mentioned... no one seemed to mind but I might give the cheese sauce idea a try next time (because there will DEFINITELY be a next time).
Wow. This was amazing. At first I didn't make it because I have all these holdups about food that I didn't like when I was a kid.... avacados... olives, tomatoes... I used to swear off them all... but I told myself that along with my newfound vegan lifestyle I might as well try some things that I used to dislike... and low and behold... YUM!!! This was the best thing I have tried from the vegan part of the book. Of course, as another reader pointed out, this will not help at all with weightloss, but it sure is perfect to take to non-vegan get togethers. I added some sauteed onion bits and used premade gaucamole and canned diced tomatoes (drained), but other than that I follwed it to a T.

I made this last week and everyone loved it!  It made quite a bit and lasted about 3 days.  I used refried beans that already had green chiles in it, instead of adding the chiles separately.  Everyone thought the shredded, does not melt well, vegan cheese on top was shredded carrot lol
