Dandelion

Growing dandelion is super cheap and is so good for you! Try it in summer salads or stir-fries! When you buy it from a farmer’s market or the store it costs something like $2, and it goes bad if you don’t eat it in a week. But when you grow it yourself, it grows constantly, like a weed. It doesn’t go bad in the ground, so there is no pressure to use it up, and you can get the exact amount you want. Plus it looks pretty and it is soooooo good for you!

If you haven’t eaten dandelion before, here are a couple of ways to try it:

  • Put 4 or 5 leaves (chopped or cut in large pieces) into a salad
  • Stir-fry it with other greens and serve warm

Have fun experimenting, and let me know if you invent any yummy new dandelion dishes along the way!

Hi, I google-translated Dandelion because i did not know this word :) I was srprised to find out that Alicia was talking about Paardenbloemen (bet you did not know that word also- translated it means Horsesflowers :) people are always complaining about them, i have many in my garden randomly growing, now i am sure i will not "destroy" them but will look for nice ways to eat them :) Thanks for all the info!!!

What a timely post. I had been doing some reading about relief from PMS bloating, and dandelion tea seems to be a great remedy.

I wondered if they were one in the same (yard "weeds" vs dandelion from the store).  I bought some-yes very bitter and added them to soup.  My husband thinks I have crossed a line into weirdoville when I am paying money for what he says is "the scourge of every backyard."  They are easy to grow.  Perhaps I will set aside a place for them....

So nice to see Dandelion getting so much Love!:)

I'm a huge Dande fan. If anyone is interested and  would like to read a bit more about Dandelion and its amazing benefits and properties, I invite you to go to http://mortarnpestle.me/?p=73.

A truly wonderful herb.

interesting..

In traditional Chinese herbal medicine theory dandelion (pu gong ying) is good for the liver qi (the liver's vital energy). It also clears heat. In Chinese medical theory the idea of heat in the body was used to explain medical conditions that appear as heat. Red swollen eyes, boils, abscesses, UTIs as well as stomach and lung infections with yellow sputum could all be described as heat. Dandelion tea could be used to treat these conditions or dandelion could be consumed regularly as a source of nutrition without making the body too cold. The traditional method would be to cook the greens or make tea.

Nice, I never knew dandelion has so many different useful functions. I think making tea out of it is one of the most convenient way to consume it. Thank you very much for this information. I think that herbal therapy is the best one for sure.
