Earth Day

This week, I've been sharing lots of information about Earth-friendly events, along with some cool eco giveaways in honor of Earth Day!

We Kind Lifers try to make everyday Earth Day, but this week, we get to share our convictions with a global community of activists and citizens who care about the environment.

This year EarthDay.org is focusing on reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainability through its A Billion Acts of Green campaign. At their website, you can sign up for a simple initiative like recycling at home, or a larger project like planting trees in your community. Many of you most likely do these things already, but Earth Day is a fantastic excuse to share your eco-friendly habits with friends and family!

For more ideas about Earth Day, check out the blog I wrote last year! Let’s invite everyone we know to celebrate with us! How do you plan to spend Earth Day?

I didn't have any plans today other than the usual of eating vegan but I found that I was able share information about the vegan lifestyle, the kind diet book and tkl website with a girl named Christal at a hardware store called Fastenal in Chester, Maryland.  We spent a significant amount of time talking. I also shared with her the fact that the meat industry has more impact on the environment than all forms transportation combined.  She said she was a fan of yours Alicia and seemed very excited to hear about your book and website.  I didn't think to credit myself with this today but then I thought "hmm, that's spreading the word and getting the vegan lifestyle in the front of someone's mind".

I was going to spend it planting vegetables in a garden but then it rained so I spent the day inside making fresh carrot juice and cooking some of my favorite vegan meals.

Oh, and I also just located a recycling drop-off box location in my community and am in the process of implementing a recycling system in my home. =)

I shared how to conserve energy at work with my coworkers.  My husband and I spent the night using no electricity at our house, and we talked about how to do more for the planet in the future:)

I planted datura for my grandmum, worked a shift at the Park Slope Food Coop, drank a blue-green algae Brooklyn Kombucha, and listened to the Gary Null show. I heard a heart wrenching stat from Dr. Vandana Shiva, an Indian Activist: Over 250,000 Indian farmers have committed suicide since 1997 because of crop failure. Many farmers drink pesticide in order to end their lives. So it's not only in the United States where monsanto wreaks havoc.

Last year was our first summer in our first home and we hit the ground planting! We established an organic vegetable garden and planted 8 trees along with many perennials, grape vines, blueberry bushes, herbs, etc. We are devoted to celebrating the earth and giving back as much as we can. That is how we celebrate earth day, everyday!

Since becoming vegan I have lots of fruit and vegetable waste so I wanted to start a compost bin so that I could use the waste for good instead of putting it into a land fill.  All I had to do was google "how to make a compost bin" and there were lots of good sites to help me get started.  I was even able to use an old garbage can I had in the garage.  It was really easy and I got the kids involved by letting them roll it around.  I can't wait to use it on my garden next year!
