have a corn broom!

corn brooms

We’ve all seen the icky plastic brooms sold nowadays at big box stores like Target and Walmart. Some of those stores actually still sell old-fashioned corn brooms, but even their corn brooms have plastic handles.

You can, however, get a truly old-fashioned, eco-friendly corn broom at your local hardware store. The broom part is 100% biodegradable, and many hardware stores sell them with recycled handles. And of course, your hardware store-bought broom can double as a Halloween prop in a couple of months!

What’s your favorite eco-house cleaning tip?

I found one with a wooden handle at Lowe's for really cheap.  I own a small concession type trailer (we have a full vegan menu!) and needed a broom that was small but sturdy ... found ours for under $5 if i remember correctly.  I also have an Amish one that my sister gave me as a wedding gift, I use it as a besom for my rituals so cleaning is off limits, although a naiive houseguest once took it out of my sacred space and started cleaning the stoop with it (grr.)  That one is BEAUTIFUL! the bristles are multi coloured and were dyed with natural, veggie dyes and the metal used to connect the "working end" to the handle have been covered with a lovely, woven cornhusk covering.

Love these!

so cute and i love the natural look and feel of corn brooms. we always had these in the barn while i was growing up!

I never even thought!  Now Im thinking of other items I use almost daily and could probably have been more eco about it... next time i need a broom I'll definately go to the hardware store.

My best eco tip I guess is that I use vinegar and water in a spray bottle to clean almost everything in my house.  Its something I know wont make me sick, my cats, and I dont feel bad when it goes down the drain.  My mother told me it cleans stainless steel better than anything she has tried.

Whenever my sink gets clogged I use baking soda and vinegar followed by boiling water. It works so well and I don't have to worry about those nasty chemicals

Awesome! Here's what we do with leftover birthday balloons.. now a birthday card money holder - card is often recycled too!

I like to cut up old towels and use them as rags to clean instead of buying paper towels.

Check out this amazing store on Granville Island in Vancouver. They even make small scrub brushes for the kitchen. I love this store, and their products are local and handmade!
