oprah's earth day advice
Posted by Alicia Silverstone on Apr 30, 2010

I caught Oprah’s Earth Day episode last week, and it was soooo good.  For those of you who didn’t see it, I wanted to share some highlights with you.

Oprah spoke with the people who made The Cove, the documentary about the dolphin slaughter in Japan, that recently won an Oscar.  You can see her interview with them here:

The way that we can help is to spread the word about The Cove, and get as many people as possible aware of the current situation.  The best resource is takepart.com/thecove. Here are some things that we, as individuals, can do:

-Sign the petition on Facebook

-If you aren’t on Facebook, you can sign it HERE

-Share the petition with your friends who live in Japan

-Text DOLPHIN to 44144, and sign the letter straight from your phone

-Join the Facebook Cause and share the petition with your friends

There was also a segment about the Plastiki, which is a ship made of 12,500 plastic soda bottles and other recycled materials. David de Rothschild is a British explorer, and was inspired to build this boat after learning about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – which is a swirl of trash that stretches across the Pacific from California to Japan, and has killed millions of animals.

Take a look at this clip from the episode about the Garbage Patch, and how bad plastic is for the environment

:

David made this boat to get people to rethink waste as a resource, and is sailing around on this boat to make people realize how garbage is threatening the health of our planet.

Since David’s goal is to educate people about the waste that is threatening the oceans – which is mainly plastic bags, styrofoam cups, soda bottle caps, and styrafoam containers -  the way that you can help the cause is by going to myplastiki.com and pledge to better our oceans and planet. You can pledge not to use plastic bottles, plastic bags, styrene foam... Or all 3!

Did any of you see this episode?

These clips make be both sad and hopeful at the same time.  Sad that we have so much work to do in order to heal our planet and it's animals,  yet hopeful that we are moving in the right direction.  I really hope that we can keep all of the information regarding these issues moving into the mainstream.

It's sad very sad what we are doing to our planet and it's animals, but reading all your comments and some of us who try to do something to make it better, gives me some hope that we will eventually get to a better place, a healthy, peaceful and clean planet earth!
Everytime my boyfriend gives me a bottle of water or uses a bottle of water, I bring it home clean it and save it to fill up with my filtered water for travel.  If I can't stop him, I at least try to reuse the bottles.

I have also been using my granparents daily news papers for kitty litter.  It is less messy than clay and fresh step. Is this a good idea?

Also, are Lush products good for the environment?

I've heard lots of negative things about plastic water bottles - especially the "one use" ones. I'm not sure if the quality of plastic is low and therefore leaches chemicals into the water you drink out of them, or if that only happens when they get heated in some way (sitting in your hot car or in the sun). Regardless, there's been enough about them for it to scare me, and I steer right clear of them. I wouldn't use them.
A great idea would be to grab one of those travel filters and travel water bottles for your bf for his birthday, valentine's day, or for any day!  I love kind gifts!
I was feeling really really horrible about this terrible oil spill and didn't know what I could do to help, but then I found this:

Its from Matters of Trust, they take hair from your animals shedding and from hair salons when you get your hair cut and stuff them into old nylons to make oil booms and also make oil mats which are so EFFECTIVE at cleaning up oil spills! Your hair could help! I certainly hope Alicia posts this on the kind life because if we all did this we could make a difference!!!! :)

I don't understand the need to use plastic water bottles when we can get them from our faucets with a filter and drink water just as fresh! And just wash our glasses like in the good ol' days!  Plastic bags, Plastic bottles, styrofoam, they are ALL things that will be here way long after we're all gone.  Doesn't that make people wonder WHY we are doing this?

I don't know where to post this, but this is really well-done, and worth seeing.  Thank you...
