Kind Lifer Margie recently shared how adopting a kind diet helped her to ditch cigarettes. Check it out:

“My name is Margie Perez and I am currently 25 years old. I began smoking at the age of 18 and didn't really see an end in sight. I used smoking as a way to relieve stress, and at one point, I was smoking up to a pack a day...I was addicted. I was never health conscious, and figured I was too young to get sick. However, I was getting sick multiple times a year, sometimes every two to three months. I saw you on 'Oprah' talking about your vegan lifestyle and I must admit, I thought you were crazy at first. Who doesn't like meat!?! I was intrigued though by your lifestyle, and I went out and bought your book, never thinking of changing the way I ate.

After reading your book, I kept the idea of being a vegetarian at the back of my mind for a couple of months. This was a slow transition for me. I slowly began watching documentaries on food and reading other books on vegetarian/vegan lifestyles. I gradually made the transition. I started out vegetarian and started to slowly care about my health. I noticed small changes. I felt like my skin was glowing. My hair was softer. It was easier for me to maintain the weight I wanted to be. Being a vegetarian eventually got me to care more about my lifestyle and give up smoking. I began cutting down the amount that I smoked until I finally gave it up.

I am happy to say that it has been nine months since my last cigarette and almost two years since I last ate meat. I am still flirting with the idea of becoming vegan but I try to eat as much vegan as possible. Thank you for being an inspiration and helping me get my health back!”

This story thrills me, truly. I'm so happy for you - this is just the best news ever! Keep us updated on how you’re doing! If anyone else has a success story to share, private message me, or post a note to your profile and “like” it. I may feature your story on the homepage of The Kind Life!

That is so great to hear! My boyfriend is currently a smoker and he sometimes smokes a pack a day. i really want him to quit, but he is stubborn, and I know he won't do it until he's really ready. I just hope he can soon see, like yourself, that smoking is a bad expensive habit and that he would feel much better without them.

So inspirational! Way to go Margie!! You have saved your health and you are saving lives at the same time:-)

Beautiful girl, and inspirational for me. I'm Vegetarian, flirting with Veganism. And the more vegan food i eat the more like the cigarettes i smoke just feel so much wronger than usual for me.

Thank you for sharing your story, it's very inspring! I'm what one could call a "social smoker," and have recently decided to quit for good. I have been vegetarian for a few years and am well on my way to becoming a full fledged vegan. Best of luck to you!

My sister has had a really hard time quitting smoking, and just can't do it. I sent her this post and she picked up THE KIND DIET. She is really considering going veg! I'm SO excited for her. And by the way, WAY TO GO MARGIE!!!!

Thank you guys for the support! I still am tobacco free. It's not easy...but it can be done. Thanks again for all the love and support : )

I am on day two of not smoking and appreciate you sharing your success. I have tried to stop multiple times and I am willing to try anything to stop. I have the book and have to actually read it. If it helps I will try it too.

Thank you for your story Margie. You are doing so well. I'm on Day 10 of no smoking and it helps reading positive stories like yours. I've been a vegetarian for years and after reading the Kind Diet am now almost completely vegan. Robert, I found Alicia's book to be very helpful and very motivating. Whenever I feel like a cigarette I plan a yummy healthy vegan meal and before long have forgotten all about the cigarette. I'm also reading Thrive: the vegan nutrition guide to optimal performance in sports and life. This was mentioned in the Kind Diet and is really inspiring me to lead a more active life. I've lost count of the amount of times I've tried to quit but this time feels different and I'm very determined. You can do it Robert!!
