Daikon

While many people experience weight loss as a natural side effect of adopting a vegan diet, some of you have shared that you’re still having trouble shedding those extra pounds. So, I want to get specific about what works and what doesn’t. First, there is a lot of vegan junk food out there (potato chips, French fries, even Oreos are vegan). Going vegan alone doesn’t always result in weight loss for every person – it’s the veggies and whole grains that really do the trick.

If you’re serious about slimming down, follow all of these tips for 30 days, and see how you feel afterward. Keep in mind, not everyone needs to lose weight. If that’s not a goal of yours, these tips are still great for general health.

Follow the superhero plan. Be a superhero six days a week and treat yourself to one to three vegan meals per week.

Go crazy with grains and veggies. Seriously, eat as much as you want! Note that this doesn’t include breads and pastas – only the actual grains (brown rice, millet, quinoa, oats etc…).

Make friends with daikon (pictured above). It’s a natural diuretic than can be added to soups, stews, and other veggie dishes.

Chew your food. Simply putting your fork down in between each bite is a great way to start. Plus, when you begin to chew your food thoroughly, you enjoy the flavors more. Give it a try!

Stay away from sugar. It’s addictive, and ditching sugar can be hard at first. Brown rice syrup is great if you’re having trouble kicking sweets. Stick to superhero desserts, and after a few days you should find that your sugar cravings are fading.

Go easy on salt. That includes shoyu and miso. Too much saltiness can make you crave sweets! Don’t be afraid of salt, but use it wisely.

The best part about this method of weight loss is that you don’t have to count calories or worry about food ratios. In my book, I also share a recipe for a great weight-loss tea that you can drink to support your weight-loss plan. Tip: Be sure you eat the pulp at the end.

Do you have any healthy weight-loss tips to share? What has worked for you in the past?

Sandy N. Good stuff you offered regarding supplements - nice to know as I continue to look into all natural organic vegan lifestyle - I disagree that veganism "cannot deliver all of our necessary nutrients naturally." Please explore further, beginning with Alicia's blog right here.  Namaste!

@Ricky You said that you disagree with my assertion that veganism cannot deliver all necessary nutrients naturally, yet you fail to provide any support showing why you disagree. My comment that you were addressing specifically cited B12 as a nutrient that can not be naturally acquired in sufficient amounts through a natural (non supplmental) source. If you believe veganism can provide all nutrients naturally, then you must have a natural food source of B12 that I am unaware of. What vegan food(s) have you found that provide your daily B12 needs?

Sandy, I asked a vegan macrobiotic counselor what he took. He said he uses TwinLab Tiny Dots.  He didn't need them every day. I think just a couple times a week.

Miso has B12 in it, but it is apparently not enough.

Here's the link giving a description of what they contain:

OREOS ARE NOT VEGAN. You may want to check your facts, mi amiga.  I don't know about others out there, but I am much more concerned with being aware of each ingredient and location of origin.  Nabisco cannot even provide you with this. Eeek, this irresponsible veganism is concerning.

Please read:

It's one thing to acknowledge that in a world where animal exploitation is rampant that it's impossible to always avoid consuming foods whose ingredients or processing have involved some sort of animal exploitation; it's another matter, however, to fall into the practice of deliberately turning a blind eye where a simple question or two can provide that information and allow you to choose and act accordingly. So? I wrote to Nabisco and asked if its Oreos are animal-free. Specifically, I asked if the sugar used in them is processed with bone char. The response on December 23:

Hi Mylene,

Thank you for visiting http://www.nabiscoworld.com and for your interest in our OREO product.

I understand that knowing what ingredients are in the food products you eat directly affect how you practice your lifestyle, and Kraft Foods does all that it can to assist its consumers in making educated food decisions.

I apologize but unfortunately this ingredient information is not currently available.

As you can imagine our products change frequently, and maintaining a list of products that contain enzymes would be virtually impossible.

Thank you for contacting us and please add our site to your favourites and visit us again soon!

Anne T,

I do bodyrock usually every other day and jog on my off days. I enjoy running a lot, but don't want to overdo it on my joints!

I understand what you mean about your family. My friends are the same way. They're always calling me an exercise freak and talking about my veganism choices. It's hard for them to understand that I like working out, playing sports, and eating well.

It helps me to have my organic produce delivered and make a point to eat it all before the next delivery. I order a good amount, so at the end of the week I get creative to finish it all off.

I like your blog, working on one of my own! Keep up the good work.

It's great to have a place that you can find support and information that you need. I am starting this new way of living and hope to keep it up.  I am very excited and hope to receive any tips you guys can give me. Thanks

I really think that quitting sugar works really well. Not only for your appearence but for you mind and emotions also. Suagr makes poeple do and feel crazy things. Its addictive and definitely not natural.

Sarah Wilson wrote an 'I quit sugar program' that gives tips and steps to quit suagr and clear your mind and body.

I also think eating unprocessed, organic, wholefoods made with love taste better and do wonders for your whole body, mond and spirit. Also some fibre and lots of water are a good way to go.

I also avoid dairy and meat like alicia, but enjoy some yummy organic fish from time to time.

You can see the benefits of eating this way by looking at Alicia. She is gorgeous and always looks glowing, fresh and healthy.
