vegan bodybuilders!

Kind Lifer Gretchen recently shared this blog by vegan bodybuilder Giacomo Marchese, and I thought you’d all find it interesting and inspiring for the more macho meat eaters in your lives!

giacomo

In his blog, Giacomo talks about the false hype about protein, where he gets his plant-based protein, and his forthcoming documentary, Vegan Brothers in Iron.

Here’s a little excerpt from Giacomo’s blog:

“Whether you are a Vegan or a Raw Foodist…you will get your fill of protein. If you’re a bodybuilder and you indulge in the theory of excessively high protein intake and caloric deficit, you can do it. It’s actually far more efficient, and healthier as vegan foods have zero cholesterol, for you to use vegan protein powders because many of these vegan sources are micronutrient powerhouses. Spirulina and Chlorella, for example, are superfoods. One serving of either equates to 35 servings of vegetables in regards to vitamin and mineral content. Even small amounts will benefit you immensely!”

If your friends or family are skeptical of your choice to eat a kind diet, share Giacomo’s blog, and remind them that there are all kinds of vegans.

Who else inspires you?

Glad you posted this.  I have switched to a Vegan diet just prior to summer and have been loving it and the results but have many concerned over "protein" intake.  I do Crossfit and those in that circle mostly follow a Paleo diet (basically a TON of meat).  Although I've been successful at the vegan side of things, I'm now learning how to eat more as an athlete so info like this is helpful.  It does show that you can succeed without eating meat.

I'm reading a book by Brendan Brazier (A vegan Ironman Triathlete) called Thrive and its been awesome in case anyone needs any more guidance.  He created Vega products and I'm so thankful for them!

Giacomo and his vegan brothers look fantastic! Shared with my friends.

Steph Davis is another inspiring vegan. She is a rock climber, BASE jumper and wingsuit flyer. Her free soloing (climbing by yourself, without any belay) of difficult roots is unbelievable! You can see it at her blog http://www.highinfatuation.com/blog/category/videos-and-pictures/.

Unfortunately, most climbers believe so far they should eat meat and dairy products to be strong...

spirulina is good but it is not the single richest and most complete source of organic nutrition in the world. That would be Moringa. Here are some stats for Moringa

*Vitamin A (3X more than Carrots)
Vit B1 (4X more than Pork)
Vit B2 (50X more than Sardine)
Vit B3 (50X more than Peanuts)

*Vit C (6X more than Oranges)

*Vit E (4X more than Corn Oil)
Calcium (17X more than Milk)
Iron (30X more than Spinach) Zinc (6X more than Almonds)
Potassium (3X more than Bananas)
Dietary Fiber (5X more than Common Vegetables) Amino Acid (6X more than Garlic)
GABA (100X more than Brown Rice)
Poly Phenol (2X more than Red Wine)
Protein (2x more than Cows Milk)

 *Highlighted items are anti-oxidant property.

Moringa was recently tested and was found to have the highest nutritional content of any plant ever tested. Of course it Vegan. You can find the highest quality Moringa in powder form or in tea bags at www.greenvirginproducts.com.

Well I am DEFINITELY inspired... but it has nothing to do with food!!!!  Way to go Giacomo!!!!

Alicia, there are a number of MMA fighters who have gone vegan, too! MMA fighter Jake Shields told MMAfighter.com: “It’s good to be an example that you can do what you want. James Wilks just went vegan, I think last month. He just called me and I know more and more guys are doing it. I think that’s pretty cool,” Shields said. “I’m starting a trend maybe.”

Blue Snake Books actually has a good post by Lily Prasuethsut about vegan MMA fighters: http://bluesnakeblog.wordpress.com/2011/06/08/fighting-for-veganism-new-diets-in-mma/

Oh my goody-goody gumdrops!  Those are some ab's!

Under his armpits some education, maybe he needs a laser skin treatment smiley-laughing.gif

Thank you thank you THANK YOU! I am SO so happy that you posted this. My boyfriend has been telling me for the past few years that it's impossible to build muscle without eating lots of meat and protein. I've always thought differently, so it's been difficult and frustrating to listen to and to hear. I do worry about not being able to have the body that I want being a vegan/vegetarian so it's nice to have a source that can potentially answer those questions for me.
