world water day!!
Posted by Alicia Silverstone on Mar 22, 2010

World Water Day is today, March 22nd!  This day has been celebrated since 1993 when it was born in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

Every year there is a different theme for this day and according to the website this year's focus is on raising awareness of water quality under the theme 'Clean Water for a Healthy World'.  There are many events happening all around the world that incorporate water as a theme and you can check them out HERE.

I want to highlight this day because I just feel so fortunate to have clean, safe water whenever I want it.  According to the World Water Day people, an estimated 1.1 billion people rely on unsafe drinking-water sources.

Even those of us who have clean drinking water should do what we can do conserve water.  Here are some tips for saving water:

-Don’t flush... Unless you have to!

-Make sure that your dishwasher is full and well stacked before running it

-Don’t keep the water running when you are washing your hands or brushing your teeth. Turn it off until you need it! Same with washing dishes.

-Take shorter showers and mindful baths, with as little water as possible

-Being veggie saves water!! One 16 ounce steak uses the amount of water that you need for 6 months worth of showers, so by just eating kindly we save sooo much water!

-Instead of pouring old water bottles, or cups of water out, use that water for your pets or plants

-Heat up water in an electric tea kettle in your bathroom instead of running the sink until the water gets hot

-If you soak beans overnight, use the soaking water for your plants

-Make your toilet more eco friendly

-By planting native flowers and plants in your garden, you save water because they require less water to survive

We have to remember that water is so important to our survival, and we must respect it.

What will you do to celebrate World Water Day or to raise awareness in your community?

Stay tuned, because I will be posting blogs about water all week long!!

I don't flush at night time, it saves water and doesn't wake anyone up, hehehe.

Also on a sobering note, I just saw my friend's photos - she's in Africa at the moment. There is a little girl holding a water bottle and it was heartbreaking to see that the water is BROWN and MUDDY.

I am ashamed to say that until seeing that, the reality hadn't hit home, I seriously didn't get how lucky I was. So yeah, let's save water please.
This year, I gave up birthday presents & asked my friends & family to donate money to Charity: Water instead :) So far we've raised $124! Still accepting donations :) http://mycharitywater.org/jen23

This blog is so time appropriate!!! Today I signed up for a Rain Barrel Workshop. I’ll learn at this two hour seminar everything about the rain water collection, installation of the rain barrel and the best thing of all the 55 gallon barrel will be given to me at the end of the class. Can’t wait to put this monster to work and for a change allow my garden to thrive in spring water.

im hoping to try to do something for wateraid next year! any ideas?

Ok, where did people pee before toilets? And do you think the pee just disappears into thin air when it's flushed away? No, it causes an over flow of high concentration of chemicals at a waste treatment facility or finds a home in a septic tank that actually drains out into what is called a drain field. Essentially peeing outside does benefit nature as long as it is properly dispersed, meaning a large concentration of ammonia and salt will cause vegetative murder(peeing in the same spot) but by having several designated pee spots your whole garden or lawn will love you. For guys we have the ability to do what's called the walk n pee technique(very effective when playing golf and you not only save a flush but you get exercise too and feed the veggies).HOWEVER, before properly mastered it can cause a little embarrassment and more frequent jeans or plaid golf pant changes:)

tapproject.org - Pay $1 at certain restaurants for tap water that you normally drink for free, and make a difference through unicef.
This made me so incredibly sad. It was on the AOL news crawl while I was at work. Our beautiful water, oceans don't deserve this
